said Thursday night he believes

we intend to insist on carrying

Francisco charter.”

feel it my duty as a member of

The plea was made in an open
letter to Harvard Athletic Director
William J. (Bill) Bingham by the
editors of the Harvard Crimson.
The student daily will publish it in
the morning edition.
“Ten thousand men of Harvard
have long looked to you (Bingham)
as the personification of fair play
and sportsmanship,” reads the let
ter.
“Today, 2,000,000 citizens of
Brooklyn—dazed, bewildered, al
most crushed by the injustice of
Leo Durocher’s suspension—look to
the outside world for leadership.

Earthquake Called
Strongest in Years
SEATTLE, April 10 (AP)—The
earthquake which shook a large
area in the southwest states early
Thursday made the strongest re
cording of any tremor in recent
years on the University of Washing
ton seismograph, Associated Pro
fessor Howard Coombs reported.
He said it started recording at
7:59 a.m. and continued intermit
tently until after 9 a.m.
"I am surprised that it didn’t do
more damage,” the seismologist
commented. “It probably was be
cause it was so deep-seated.” He
said that, due to proximity, the
seismograph recording was strong
er than the record of the Aleutians
quake which caused a tidal wave a
year ago, but tha tthe quake actu
ally was not as violent as the north
ern one.

Nine Men Killed
In Mine Explosion
EXETER, Pr., April 10 (AP) —
Nine men. were killed and nine oth
ers injured Thursday in an anthra
cite mine explosion 350 feet under
ground.
Only two victims were found
soon after the early morning blast
ripped through the Knox Coal com
pany operation. Rescue workers
digging through the debris several
hours later found additional bodfes.
Assistant Police Chief Ed Petrillo
said the explosion, which rocked the
workings soon after the men went
on,the job, was caused 'by gas.
There was no comment from the
company.
Wilson Chooses Lazor

Longshoremen Urge Nationalization
SAN FRANCISCO, April 10
(AP)—The nationalization of the
nation’s basic industries was
urged Thursday in a resolution
adopted without a dissenting vote
by the CIO International Long
shoremen's and Warehousemen’s
seventh biennial convention.

declared', “This means simply that
we should let the government
operate what it already owns.’’
Railroads, shipping and electric
power were industries specifically
mentioned for nationalization dur
ing floor discussion of the resolu
