■AVC Council Chiefs Meet At a five-hour night meeting in the Commerce building on the cam pus April 5, newly elected officers and committee heads of the Oregon state council of the American Vet erans committee convened in their first formal session. The A VC state planning board tentatively set May 15 as the pub lication date for the first issue of the New Vet, projected state news paper under the editorship of Bruce Bishop. The group, headed by State Chairman Ray Johnson, appointed —^Phil Dreyer of Portland to its full time executive secretaryship and heard reports from other state offi cers; Dr. Vaughn Albertson, Van port, vice-chairman; Keith Bacon, secretary; Carl Maxey, finance chairman; H. A. Pullen, Portland, membership; and Jeane Nunn, pub licity. Guests R. V. Mills, E. C. Robbins, Robert D. Clark, and Dr. L. H. Cressman, all of the University fac ulty, heard AVC plans for educa tional and finance wings of expert advisers in those fields. Dr. Cress man, head of the anthropology de partment, expressed particular in terest in contributing to racial stud ies. AAUW Meet Proposes Schwering Fellowship At a recent state meeting of the Oregon division of the American Association of University Women, held on the University campus, a resolution was adopted to name a study grant for the late Hazel P. SSewering, former dean of women, if Oregon has the privilege of nam ing one of the national fellowships. The resolution read, “Whereas there is such a need for educational assistance of other countries, there fore, Be it resolved that this divi sion continue its efforts to raise the amount contributed to national fel lowships to the end that the study grants and reconstruction aid grants may be increased. Be it fur ther resolved, if Oregon has the privilege of naming a study grant that it be named the Hazel Pruts man Schwering Memorial Grant." Weekend Beauty (Continued from page one j Class Secretary Chosen President of Phi Theta Upsilon is only one of the several campus positions held by Bobbie Fullmer, who was another DeMolay sweet heart in Pocatello, Idaho. The blonde junior class secretary, who stands five feet four inches high, now calls Wenatchee, Washington, khome .She is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi. Janis Peterson, a blue-eyed blonde, attended Grant high school in Portland, and is majoring in painting at the University. Her ac tivities at the art school keep her in that department most of the time, but she still has time to hold the rushing chairmanship for her living organization. Alpha Phi. Sallie Timmens, the only Califor nia candidate, was a May Queen at tendant when she was attending high school at Grosse Pointe, Michi gan, before moving to Carmel, Cal ifornia. Sallie, who was recently a finalist in the Miss Vogue contest, has worked on the Emerald staff and has held offices in Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Medford Girl Picked One-half of the brunette combin ation is Joanne Utz, a recent final ist in the Emerald Cover Girl con test. Joanne, an advertising major, is from Medford. The honored status is not new to her, either, for she ruled her high school senior prom as queen. She is a member of Delta Zeta. The campus will vote on the eight contestants Wednesday when poll ing places will be set up in the Co-op between 9 and 5. From the campus selections, the Junior Weekend queen and her court of four prin cesses will be named. Petitions Due April 19 Petitions from freshman women for Kwama, sophomore W'omen’s service honorary, are due April 19 at 12 noon, Joan Williams, Kwama president, an nounced yesterday. They may be turned into Miss Williams at the Delta Gamma house, or to any Kwama member. Freshmen are to list all their activities for fall and winter term.
