Communist Check
WASHINGTON, April 1 (AP) —
Immediate prosecution of the Com
munist party and its officials on
the ground that they failed to
register as foreign agents was de
manded Tuesday by Representa
tive J. Parnell Thomas (R.-N. J,),
chairman of the house committee
on UnAmerican activities.
Thomas wrote the justice de
partment that “beyond any doubt,
the Communist party of the Unit
ed States is now, and has been
since its inception, an agent of a
foreign government.”
Simultaneously, committee
members disclosed that they will
shortly issue a new report deal
ing with the “American Youth for
Democracy” organization. Wit
nesses have called it a communist
front and said it is active in
American colleges.
To permit expansion of the com
mittee’s campaign, the house ad
ministration committee approved
Tuesday a bill to permit the
spending of an extra $50,000.

men and 22 women receive the
required physical examination in
the infirmary as entering UO

Dr. Miller announced that any

the infirmary.
The infirmary also was a little
lacking in April Fool’s prank

Jessica Bartels, Woody Carson,
Norma McKeegan, Winona Har

ATHENS, April 1 (AP)—King
George II of Greece died un
expectedly Tuesday and his
brother, Prince Paul, will be sworn
in as monarch at 7:30 p. m.
The king, 56, died of a heart
ailment.
Immediately after the new king
is sworn in, the government and
monarch will issue messages to
the people.
Much Exiled
George, who spent many years
of his reign in exile, was returned
to his throne last Sepember by a
plebiscite.
Former Premier George Papan
dreou said the king died at 2:30
p. m. He said the king recently
had been complaining of pain
caused by angina pectoris.
Election Contested
The king, twice exiled from his
country, returned to Greece after
an election decided upon continu
ance of the monarch. This election
has been attacked as unrepresen
tative by Russia factions, but its
fairness was upheld by American
and British delegates who ob
served the polling.
The death brought a new angle
into the question of American aid
to Greece, now being debated in
Washington.

Second Edition of Book
Set for Spring Release
“Small Scale Retailing” by Dr.
N. H. Cornish, professor of busi
ness administration, is scheduled
for its second edition in the spring
by Binford and Mort, Portland pub
lishers.
Since its first appearance less
than a year ago the book has
been adopted by universities and
colleges throughout the United
States as a text, and business
men in all lines of trade are buy
ing it for their use.
Professional and trade maga
zines such as the Journal of Re
tailing, Domestic Commerce, The
Know How Exchange of the
National Retail Dry Goods associ
ation, and the Oregon Food Mer
chants Magazine have reviewed it
However, the Interior depai t
ment emphasized that the agency's
powers are gone. Presumably any
actual new authority would have
to come from congress, though
recommendations from the office
might get voluntary compliance.
Faced with the possibility that
the mine shutdown might extend
past the “mourning” period of six
days set by John L. Lewis, United
Mine Workers president, Secretary
of the Interior J. A. Krug directed
that the organization be kept in
existence temporarily.
favorably and many authorities in
retailing have commended Dr. Co
rnish’s book highly.
