In the spring sports
Duck Coaches Howard Hob
son and Bill Hayward are
' going to be in fairly good
shape, as far as numbers go.
That, of course, is taking
for granted that quantity
does not necessarily mean
quality. However, both
coaches will have fairly
healthy turnouts. Baseball
Coach Hobson is consider

nave d jumui varsity set-up, along witn tne varsity, inougn
nothing official has been announced, Barney Koch will
undoubtedly take over the JV squad.
One big reason for cutting baseball to two squads is lack
of equipment. In track Colonel Bill will be faced with the
same problem. At present Hayward plans to have just a
varsity. It’ll be a case of making the big squad or not mak
ing- one at all. This can't all be blamed on a lack of equip
ment though.
Southern Division Has Tight Race
While Coach Slats Gill and his Oregon State Beavers were
^sewing the northern division basketball bunting up in fairly
easy fashion the southern division loop has been a different
story. Down south they are in their final week and UCLA
and California are battling down to the wire. At present
UCLA leads the league with seven wins and three losses.
California’s Golden Bear is holding down the second place
spot with .six wins and four losses.
Friday and Saturday are the big payoff nights. The
Bruins play a two game series with the cellar-locked South
ern California Trojans, and the Golden Bears scramble with
Stanford’s off-and-on-again, third place Indians. This
gives the Uclans a golden opportunity to crack the Trojans
twice and in doing so run up the division title flag. Poor
old El Trojan has been the Idaho of the southern division
this season with but two wins in 10 starts.
Johns Scouts at Pullman
In spite of the fact that his boys have to win a couple of
more before they gain the right to run at Corvallis with the
Beavers, Uclan Coach Wilbur Johns was scouting the Oregon
State-Washington State series at Pullman. Johns really had
an eye to the future, but a lot of the boys figure that he poked
his neck out on that one. If his long shot does payoff, though,
he'll be reatly.
Stories coming from Berkeley on new head Coach Lynn
Waldorf’s first look at the University of California foot
ball squad are tending to show that quite a few people
down in the sunny clime are still a bit teed off with the
way ex-coach Frank Wickhorst was treated. Wickhorst
was, as you know, given the boot before his contract ran
out and it was the work of the ‘'students that accomplished
this. About the students, Waldorf said that he was glad
to be associated with a school where the students took such
an active interest in the athletic situation. The football
squad, Waldorf said, looked “stalwart” enough.
Waldorf Waxes Diplomatic
Those are pretty diplomatic answers to some pretty pointed
questions. Waldorf himself didn’t show any bitterness in his
interview, but the people that asked the questions did. Inci
dentally Waldorf hasn’t indicated whether he will throw the
single, double, or T formation style of football at his Coast
conference opponents.
Though an official starting date has not been announced
by football Coach Jim Aiken, spring football practice will
probably roll at Oregon around April 2.
When Oregon State lost its last ga'me of the Washington
State series the Beavers were operating without tl^-services
t_ot Erl and Anderson and Alex Peterson. According to dope
from Pullman this, not a let-up, was one of the biggest con
tributing factors, to the second loss.
Easy Judge
Beauty Gets Top Bill Tonight
The Emerald sports page beauty
quest swings into the home stretch
tonight when the athletically-mind
ed board of judges retires behind
locked doors to mull the final deci
sion. Their choice will be named the
sportside entry in the Emerald cov
er girl contest.
rne contest progressed at a
heated pace yesterday as pres
sure boys from the various teams
attempted to ease their way into
the confidences of the sports staff
“brain trust.” So determined are
the publicity agents that the
names of the sportside judges are
being kept secret to prevent co
ercion from the well-meaning,
over-zealous athletes.
Open house is slated for the Em
erald sports shuck from 7:00 to 7:30
this evening. All candidates, and
late starters as well, are invited to
drop in and “meet the boys.”
Sportians Enter Three
Top operator to date has been the
representative of the Fenton hall
Sportians—Bobside Whitely. Bob
side is handling public relations for
three different teams — the law
school chess club, the U. S. open
match-throwing association, and
the Saturday night poker club.
The chess club is backing the Pi
Phi blonde number, Marilyn Sage;
entered for the flame-tossers are
the well-known Miller girls; and
the poker club is playing a pat hand
with Mary Weiner, well-knit spouse
of the law school scholar.
Launched in the race for the
varsity swimming squad is Har
riett Vannatta, Kappa blonde
from Hawaii. The splash squad
claims little promotion is needed
for its candidate, her charm
speaking for itself.
Entered for the ski team is Pi
Phi Wanda Shaw. Slats correspon
dent Bob Wallace insists the skiers
expect little trouble if “skiing con
ditions are good.”
Football Comeback
Colonel Bill Hayward’s trackmen,
led by the promotion pair of A1
Pietsehman and Dick Shelton, have
Hendricks hall’s Gloria Albertson
on the starting blocks. Both Pietsch
man and Shelton appeared at the
Emerald shack last night and pre
dicted a record-breaking perform
ance from their entry.
