    Noble Condemns
Slanted Reports
Those correspondents in Tokyo
who “write only slanted stories at
tacking the occupation and mak
ing General MacArthur appear a
fascist’’ were criticized Saturday
by Dr. Harold J. Noble, University
of Oregon history professor, and
author and authority on Japan.
Speaking at the concluding ses
sion of the 28th annual press con
ference, Dr. Noble stated that
“I’m not saying these people are
Communists,” but said that they
“write nothing except that which
may serve to discredit the United
States occupation and to praise
Russia.”
* Special Correspondent
The University professor, who
was a special correspondent in
Japan for the Saturday Evening
Post, emphasized the importance
of the role played by the corres
pondent and explained that the
policies of the occupation can be
shaped by what these men report
back to the United States.
Dr. Noble discussed the prob
lems presented by Communist ac
tivities in Japan, admitting that
“political reform in Japan has
been complicated by the rapid
growth of the Japanese Commun
ist party.”
unaos sought
He said the Communists were
attempting to create chaos by de
stroying the capacity of Japanese
industry to recover from the de
struction of war, and then would
enforce their will upon the gov
ernment and occupation authori
ties of Japan.
Dr. Noble said that the accusa
tion that the Japanese labor move
ment had been created despite the
opposition of American occupa
tion authorities was “completely
false.” “The whole growth of the
Japanese labor movement has been
done with the co-operation, ad
vice and support of American au
thorities,” he contended.
Progress Noted
The democratization of Japan
has progressed, however, Dr. No
ble noted, saying that men new to
the Far East were frequently dis
illusioned by the progress yet
those who knew the nation before
the war are impressed' with the
advance that has been made.
