Reporting Classes Hear Farm Editor .T. S. Russell, for 21 years farm ed itor of the Des Moines Register Tribune, spoke to members of Dean George Turnbull’s and Warren C. Frice’s reporting classes Monday. Russell said that he disliked the prevalent practices of calling a press conference, handing out news releases, or granting interviews when a news source has some news. “News is where you find it, and ;it belongs to the fellow who digs it t o,” Russell said. He explained that no matter what specialized field in which a jour nalist is planning to enter, he needs n good background in the funda mentals contained in reporting. He particularly emphasized the need for accuracy. • Work on a weekly newspaper gives a good background since workers on a small paper gain ex perience in many fields, Russell Jfeaid. St. Helen's Hall Delegate To Represent Red Cross Barbara Needham, delegate to the Northwest College Red Cross Unit conference from St. Helen's Hall junior college in Portland was elected at Sunday's general session to represent the North host Red Cross at the Pacific Northwest college conference at Reed college in April, according t > Mary Anne Hansen, conference publicity chairman. The conference delegates voted to consider the appointment of a Student to represent the Pacific Northwest area at the American Red Cross national conference at Cleveland, Ohio in June. Trophies Awarded For 'Dads’ Activity More than 500 dads visited the University campus during the re cent Dads’ Weekend, Bob Wallace, general chairman, announced. Of that number 448 were officially reg istered. First place trophy for percentage of dads attending went to Delta Delta Delta, and Sigma Alpha Ep silon was awarded second place. Sherry Ross and Omega hall tied for first place in the trophy given to the house with the largest per centage of dads of freshmen at tending. Campus cleanup prize was award ed to Kappa Kappa Gamma and Sigma Phi Epsilon. It is be lieved, however, that Johnny Kahananui, Island expert, may be influential in the choice. He is well known on the Waikiki beach head as a connoisseur of delicate figures. Jazz Club Gives With Last Decade Platters Big' name bands, playing swing and jazz dating from 1930 to 1938, will be featured at the second meet ing of the jazz club tonight at 7 p.m. on the sunporch of Gerlinger. The group will be formally organ ized at this time and all interested students are asked to sit in. Records of such bands as Jimmy Lunceford, Count Basie, the Dorsey brothers, Benny Goodman, Bob Crosby, and Bunny Kerrigan will be played.
