Aggies 77, Vandals 40 Rocha Sets Division Record with 38 Counters Oregon State, with center Red Rocha going beserk to set a new Northern Division scoring record of 38 points, pulver ized a helpless Idaho quint .77-40’ at Corvallis last night. Rocha collected 15 points in the first half, and then added 25 more in spurts of hot sharpshooting during the second period to move his scoring total four points ahead of the pre vious record held jointlv hv Don McMillan of \\ ashington and Vince Hansen of Washington State college. Rocha collected his total on 16 field goals and six more points on as many trips to the foul line. He was almost robbed of his scoring glory. The Beavers had slammed their way to a 38-23 halftime lead and had rolled along to double the tally over the Van dals at 64-32 when Coach Slats Gill pulled Rocha and Lew Beck, the only remaining regulars, from the floor. That was at six and a half minutes to go in the end of the second half. When word was passed to Gill that the big Ha vmiian islander was so close to the record he then had 30 points — he was put back after two minutes rest. The Vandals saw what was coming on the scoring end and ganged up on Rocha and quickly fouled him. He made the free throw and banged in two field goals to top the previous division record. Fouled again, he toed the line and sank it for his 36th point. Torrey garnered two goals in the rush. Then Rocha whirled to drop his last and the history making 33th just as the gun ended the play. The Vandals never had a chance. They scored only five field goals in the second half. * * University of Idaho (40) FG FT PF TP Mortensen, f Evans, f . Geisler, f Merrey, f . Phoenix, c . Gano, c . Ducks Ready For Baseball With the end of the current bas ketball season in sight, Coach How ard Hobson has begun preparation for the coming baseball season, which will get under way soon after the first of March. Hobson has prepared a pre-sea son schedule which will include games wdth Pacific university. Wil lamette, Portland, and the Univer sity of Montana. The professional Salem Senators have also been scheduled. Hobby had planned a trip to California during the spring va cation for the varsity, but due to the conflicting schedules of the California schools the journey has been canceled. This year will mark the beginning of the first National Collegiate Ath letic association baseball tourna ment. This tournament will be pat terned after the existing NCAA basketball championships. These championships will give baseball new life. Coach Hobson feels. It will be an incentive for teams to win ball games, so that they can gain na tional recognition. For this reason, Hobby thinks that all teams in the conference will be strong. He mentioned that Ore gon State and Washington have especially potent squads. Hobson added that a junior var sity squad would be organized, and emphasized they would have a good schedule. Neighbors Save Warren's Car Luck was with John Warren, Oregon swimming and JV football coach, in last night’s fire when thoughtful neighbors saved his car, which was parked in the old warehouse, from being burned. His was one of the few vehicles saved in the fire which swept the building with amazing speed. Coach Warren missed the ex citement by being in Medford on school business. Learning of the fire by an earlier phone call, he said that he would remain in Medford since there was no need for his return. Ducks Gunning for Split In Five Remaining Tilts Coach Howard Hobson’s winged Ducks, trying now to salvage a .500 record in Northern Division play, opened pre liminary scrimmages in preparation tor the two-game Idaho series opening next Friday night. Sporting a league average of four wins and seven losses, the Webfoot cagers must capture all but one of their five remaining tilts to break even. In addition to the Vandal fracases, Oregon travels to Seattle to square off with the Washington Huskies in a pair of hoop battles, and close out the | season against Oregon State, here. ! Hobson had little to say con- 1 cerning last Saturday's Beaver game but admitted that the Ag- , gies have the best accuracy from the floor of any team he has seen this season. As proof of this, the Oregon mentor cites the statistics on the 71-57 debacle where Ore gon State sunk better than 50 per cent of their shots attempted. Shooting Phenomenon It was the first time in his bas ketball career that Hobson had ever seen a cage quint hit better than half of their court casts. Meanwhile the Webfoots came up with another “cold” evening, be ing particularly inaccurate at tip ins. Ball-handling and accurate passing were stressed in scrim mage yesterday, although at times the varsity looked sluggish. The coach is doing considerable shift ing of players in these workouts which may be a foreboding of what can be expected for the re mainder of the season. I Although the Vandals have failed to dent the win column in ND skirmishes to date, they gave Oregon a scare at Moscow in the second game, losing out 45-43. But Idaho usually springs an up set on some unsuspecting team be fore the season ends, and for that reason the two tilts this weekend may be equally as close. Coached by Guy Wicks, the Vandals have failed to measure up to pre-season aspirations. Much of their difficulty has been the re sult of early-game injuries to such key men as Fred Quinn on the Eastern barnstorming trip. Also there was some evidence of dis sension on the squad, centering around 6 foot 9 inch center Jack Phoenix.
