Farms to be opened on these projects will be awarded in public drawings to be held after public notices and official appli cations have been sent to those veterans whose requests are on file. In general, a homesteader must be 21 years old or the head of a family, must be a citizen, or have declared his intention of be coming a U. S. citizen and may not own more than 160 acres of land anywhere else in the U. S. Preferred Application Public Law 434, approved Sept. 7, 1944, provides that for 10 years following that date, persons who have at least 90 days honorable service and an honorable dis charge from the U. S. armed forces for service during World War II shall have the preferred right of application for 90 days before the general public may ap ply for entry on public land. Briefly, the law also provides that a serviceman is entitled to have a period equal to his term of service, not exceeding two years, deducted from the thrtee years’ residence and cultivation required under the homestead laws. Thus at the end of one year the serviceman may file his final proof, in order to gain a title to the land. Alaska Land Available The first free land grants to veterans have been completed in public drawings conducted dur ing the latter part of 1946. The land for these drawings was lo cated in the Klamath reclamation project on the California-Oregon boundary. Applications for the initial land grants in the Sho shone reclamation project in Wy oming are being taken and there is land available in Alaska. Veterans are urged to submit their requests immediately, so as to have their names on file when public notices and official applica tions become available for distri bution. If this is done, official application blanks will be mailed the moment public announcement for House Dances — for Valentine's Day — Eugene Flower Home 598 E. 13th is made that farm lands are open for settlement. All information about future free lands may be obtained by writing to the regional director of the bureau of reclamation, de partment of the interior at either Sacramento, California; Boise, Idaho; Boulder City, Nevada; or Billings, Montana.
