First Pacific Coast Showing Of Feininger Art at University Byjvne McConnell The first showing4 on the Pacific coast of Lyonel Feininger’s exhibit . of oils and water colors will be held in the little art gallery of the Uni versity school of architecture and ■dlied arts from February 10 to March 4, Dr. W. S. Baldinger, asso ciate professor of art, announced Thursday. Feininger was born in New York i but he has spent 49 years of his life studying and painting in Germany. In 1924, he was made a member of the “Blue Four,” which also includ ed Jawlesky, Klee, and Kandinsky, ail expressionists. Child Memories Shown From observing the New York Central railway, the paddle steam boats, schooners, and sloops along the Hudson river, the artist used : many of his childhood memories of these scenes in several of his paint ings in later life. In 1907 Feininger took up cartooning and at one time drew a couple of comic strips for the Chicago Sunday Tribune, one of which was “Wee Willie Winkie s World.” In later year, however, he devoted himself entirely to his painting. Group Schedules Cupid's Capers' “Cupid’s Capers,” a dance center ing around Valentine’s day, is being planned for February 12 by the Y Pongo club, business girls’ club af filiated with the YWCA. The dance will be held in the community center in Eugene from 9 to 12 p.m., with music by Art Holman and his or chestra. Campus groups that have been invited are Wesley house, Westmin ster house, campus YWCA, and V MCA, Newman club, Canterbury club, and other organized young people’s church groups, Yeomen, American Veterans committee, Amvets, and Veteran Flyers asso ciation. The city YMCA and Y-wives have also been invited. General chairman is Mrs. John Northway. Proceeds will go to the YWCA world wide observance set for March 11. The dance is open to the public. Not having been to the United States since 1887, the painter visit ed the country in the summer of 1936 to teach a summer course at Mills college in California. On re turning to Germany, Feininger de cided to leave Hitler and Germany immediately and moved to New York where he has continued his j work since 1937. In addition to his easel paintings, he painted the mu- ] rals for the New York World’s Fair marine transportation and art buildings. Subjective Approach According to Robert J. Forsyth, a graduate student in the art school, who edited- the catalog for the ex hibit, Feininger shows in his works, a subjective approach to subject matter, and a sensitivity in express ing deeply-felt emotions. The paintings are loaned by Mr. and Mrs. Feininger and were assem bled by Mrs. Bayley Willis, of the University of Washington, and cir culated by the Western Association of Art Museum directors. The stu dent committee ir. charge of the ex hibition include: Marijane Eaton, chairman, Henry Heine, John Ryan, Robert Merrill, Mary Lewis, Mary Ellen Holm, Ada Anderson, and Louis Viesteiz. Fourteen oils and eight water colors by Feininger will be on display. The gallery is open daily from 2 to 5 p.m. In addition to the Feininger ex hibition, a group of 39 color wood engravings by Oswald Goeldi and Carlos Oswald, native Brazilian painter, will be in the cases in. the hallway outside the art gallery. “Visitors are very welcome to view these two outstanding exhibitions any afternoon,” Dr. Baldinger said. 4 p.m.—Special Orides meeting in the YMCA lounge. 7 p.m.—Ski club meeting in 106 Oregon. Sun Valley ski slides will be shown. Fellowships Offered Three fellowship awards of $500 each are being awarded by Kappa Kappa Gamma, for graduate work lor one year on any campus where there is a chapter of the fraternity.
