DREXEL, SURVIVORS . . . Survivors of the Drexel Victory climb onto dock at Astoria, Oregon, from aboard the pilot schooner Columbia, which rescued them alter their wheat-laden freighter sank. The ship, headed for Japan, sank after running aground on a bar at the mouth of the Columbia, breaking it in half. None of the 9 persons on board was lost. 'Beating' Enters in Case PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 24 (AP) —A 23-year old girl said Friday she heard a “sickening” beating administered in the Cecil club the night police say ship Capt. Frank B. Tatum was carried out to be tossed, living, over a 50-foot cliff. As the girl, friend of one of the three men charged' with first de gree murder, made her statement, .police sought a piano player who disappeared from the dingy night spot after telling friends he wit nessed a terrible beating there. Capone's Heart 'Failing' MIAMI BEACH, Fla., Jan. 24 (Al*)—A1 Capone’s heart was re ported by a specialist to be failing Friday night and the doctor said “I doubt very seriously if there is a chance for recovery.” He has developed pneumonia. Hayward field is named for Ore gon's famous coach, Colonel Bill Hayward. Steelworkers Extend Pact PITTSBURGH, Jan. 24 (AP) — The U. S. Steel corporation and the CIO-U n i t e d Steelworkers agreed Friday night to extend present contracts of all “big steel” subsidiaries until April 30 to gain additional time to work out a 1947 agreement for some 170,000 work ers. News of the extension came after both sides decided to adjourn con tract discussions until Monday. A two hour morning meeting, first to be held on a new contract, ended with the union presenting its 15 point program to the steel repre sentatives headed by John A. Ste phens, vice-president in charge of industrial relations for U. S. Steel of Delaware. The present contract expires Feb. 15. Senator Wants Taxes Upheld, Budget Cut WASHINGTON, Jan. 24 (AP) — Senator George D., Ga., called on congress Friday to trim President Truman’s budget by at least $2, 500,000,000, pay $1,000,000,000 On the debt and put off cutting taxes until it is sure income will exceed outgo by at least $2,000,000,000. The president’s budget for the fiscal year beginning next July 1 called for spending $37,500,000,000, but George said: “I am sure the budget can be levelled off at $35,000,000,000 and I hope it can be cut below that point.” . Os Indian Control Remains WASHINGTON, Jan. 24 (AP) —Secretary of Interior Krug said Friday the government should con tinue its supervision of Indian tribes “until they can move into so ciety safely.” Krug told the senate civil service committee that when that time comes “we have an equal responsi bility to release the control's and restrictions of guardianship.” Tax Exemption Asked WASHINGTON, Jan. 24 (AP) — Senator James E. The seven-man court brushed aside the graying old diplomat’s contention that he belongs in the French or British zones of occupa tion, not in the American zone, and proceeded with the trial of charges that von Papen was a sup porter of Adolph Hitler in the palmy days of the Nazi regime Conviction can mean ten years at hard labor for the 69-year-old German diplomatic ace, who once served as Hitler’s vice chancellor.
