DUCK TRACKS By BERNIE HAMMERBECK Sports Editor itli the arrival of newly-appointed Jim Aiken on the cam pus as head football Coach, Oregon’s athletic shakeup is now well underway. Many things remain to be done, however, with me LHKuig- care ot some. An athletic director will be ap pointed-as soon as the man is located who can fill the quali fications. A definite requisite to a good football team is plenty of football material. Right now that is.a .question mark. With the new regime underway and the football coach announced this condition may also im prove itself. One other demand must be faced. If Coach Jim Aiken is to produceas he is capable of, • he must be free to choose his own assistants and as many as he deems necessary within the means oRthe Uni versity’s athletic denartment. VADfiHN rnRT.F.V President Newburn has already made it clear that Aiken will have this power. Aiken May Import Nevada Staff It is good news, then, to hear that Aiken may import the staff he had at Nevada—Dick Miller, end coach; Jim Bailey, backfield coach; and Jake Lawler, line coach. If these men are hired it will complete a clean sweep in the coaching staff. None of the petty trifles and differenes which resulted in the past would be carried over into the future. End Coach Dick Reed, Line Coach Vaughn Corley, and Backfield Coach Ben Winkelman well all part of the old re gime. They were chosen by Tex Oliver because they fitted his type of play and into his administration. It is extremely doubtful if Reed or Winkelman would return at any rate, and the departure of all three should be understood in our present athletic shakeup. ■ : s Use Your ASUO Card Tonight It’s the old hoop war with the Beavers again tonight. Web foot students should make certain that 5600 ASUO cards are in use tonight, to give the Ducks the all-out support the Beavers had last week when., playing, at Corvallis. Yours truly for one will be mighty happy to hear cheering following Oregon bas kets and silence-following .the Beavers’. The game tonight will undoubtedly take up where the other leftA«ff. - According to up-state reports, the Beavers have their ^sfcKtmgs** back at full strength. Oregon will be at top "strength too, depsite -reports that Stan Williamson has arthritis, A1 Popick neuritis, Roger Wiley knots on his head from ..bumping ceilings, and Bob Lavey out for two years after" swallowing a dinner knife. The battle of the guards will continue with the prediction from this corner that-tonight the “salmon” Williamson outscores the “swift one” from Corvallis—Lew Beck. Likewise in the front line the battle of the big men will continue. Perhaps this time Wiley or Red Rocha will stay in the game long enough to prove himself the superior. It’ll be a great ball game—and don’t'forget, that March-of Dimes needs your contribution too! "EVERYTHING for those who enjoy or create music and art" GRAVES MUSIC & ART 1198 Willamette Ph. 4407 DANCE EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT 9:30 to 12:30 Wayne Ryan and his band at SWIMMER'S DELIGHT 3 miles east of Goshen JVs Meet Vanport, Frosh Play Salem in Double Header Today Starting at 3 p.m., a basketball doubleheader is slated for McAr thur court this afternoon featuring Oregon’s high-geared JV and Frost quints. In the opener, the JVs face the Vanport college five In a game that may prove to be closer than records indicate. The Vanport team, although showing few wins to its credit, has been steadily gaining in strength, and with the addition of Ty Lovelace and Paul Sowers, formerly of the Oregon JVs, pack a powerful wallop. One of the sparks of the Vanport squad is wiry Tom Phillips, a head up hard-driving guard. Phillips has been their most consistent scorer this season and has been ably aided by Gordon Rankin, another ex Portland prep star. At 4 p.m., the Frosh place their unbeaten record on the block when they tackle the Salem Vi kings, in what stacks up as an even-stephen battle. The capital city team has been rolling along in championship style this season, dropping only two contests, to Jefferson high of Portland and to Klamath Falls. Both of these setbacks were re deemed by Saiem, however, as they snapped a nine game unbeaten streak of Klamath Falls. The dan gerous men for the Vikings are Cud Houck and Huey Bellinger at for wards, and Bert Allison at center.
