Beauty on the Spat tfHii'iumiiiumiiiiiiimiiiiimiiiiiiiiimmimimmiitmiiimiimiiimtni Beauty on the Spot, a weekly Em erald feature, nominates one of the campus beauties each Monday and gives her a week to write 300 words on any topic of her own choosing, proving that beauty, when on the spot, can disprove the old "beauti ful but dumb” adage. Miss Carolyn Hinson, sophomore in art, was named as the January 15 beauty, and herewith is published her arti cle. By CAROLYN HINSON Judging from the amount of fu ror and wise cracking being made, the biggest joke of the current sea son is the so-called portal-to-portal pay system. But it is far from a laughing matter. Think of the con sequences if all of these suits, which now total over $4,000,000, should be won by the wage-earners. Think of the heights and depths to which such pay demands might go, and the extent to which the words “portal-to-portal” might be made to cover. With wages being paid on every moment spent in one’s place of bus iness, regardless of type, you can imagine how easy it would be to be come enamored of one's job, and how quickly clock-watching and tardiness would be eliminated! Picture a modern business office under the portal-to-portal system, if it should extend so far: the office, for the past 45 years, has begun its business day at 9 a.m. and ended it promptly at 5:30 p.m., but now it is 8 a.m. and the workers are has tily entering the room—suspicious ly glancing at each other to note who will walk away with the high est pay check come Saturday eve ning. The winner in the early risers marathon can easily be recognized by his look of smug self satisfaction coupled with the superior air of one whose alarm clock is infallible. The day passes with each doing his vi tal task in slow motion, happy at the thought of being forced to work overtime. CAROLYN HINSON the workers stay on. At last, around 8 p.m. the last man straggles out— the same who was first in, for he is adept at wasting time. Every morn ing it is earlier, and every evening later until at last it is a dawn to midnight proposition. And if the system were extended to cover traveling time as it does with the coal miners’ descent via elevators, the picture could be car ried to more ridiculous lengths—to neighborhood feuds springing up because one neighbor lives farther from his work than another. Soon the residential districts would dis appear, and every man would com mute, as far as possible. Eventually it could get to the point where New York businessmen would live in Los Angeles and vice versa. Such absurdities are not impossi ble under complete portal-to-portal pay, and the outcome of the suits may determine the future of nation al business practice. Sit back and wait—perhaps you, too, can be a $30,000 a year typist! Next week’s Beauty on the Spot will be Aileen Slattery, of Hilyard house. Her 300-word article will be due in the journalism building by noon Monday.
