McClure Sees
Teacher Need
The need for more and better pre
pared teachers in American educa
tion fields was emphasized by Dr.
Worth McClure, executive secre
tary of the American Association
of School Administrators, speak
ing before the Wednesday morning
session of the convention of the
Northwest Association of Second
ary and Higher Schools at the
University.
According to Dr. McClure, prob
lems of teacher education and cer
tification have reached the acute
stage. Since 1939, he said, more
than 350,000 teachers have left the
schools for other professions. A sur
vey taken the fall term of 1945 dis
closed that only 13,000 men were
enrolled in teachers’ colleges, a
number far below the demand ex
pected. Furthermore, Dr. McClure
pointed out, many of these men may
never enter the teaching profession.
The predominant factor responsi
ble for this situation is the low sal
aries currently paid teachers, as
serted Dr. McClure. He told the
group that California’s action in
voting a $2400 minimum salary for
teachers was being followed by sim
ilar plans in other states. This move,
he feels, will greatly aid teacher re
cruitment.
