^ UO Symphony To Feature f Russian Theme in Concert The University of Oregon symphony orchestra, Rex Under wood conducting, will present its first concert of the school year December 11, 8:15 p. m„ in the music building auditorium. Tschaikowsky’s “Fifth Symphony,” in E minor, will highlight the program, whose theme will be Russian. In contrast will be offered a number of melodies by Johann Strauss. Different movements of Tschaikowsky’s “Fifth” have been popularized, and are quite familiar even to those present-day audi ences largely unacquainted with the composer’s works. These movements show Tschaikowsky at his melodic best. “Andante-Alleg ro Anima’’ and the “Andante Can tabile’’ illustrate the composer’s deftness in contrasting emphatic, swift-moving moments in music . with those which are light, fleet ing, and' gentle. Between the “Valse,” in allegro moderato, and the “Finale,” andante maestoso-al legro vivace, the same contrast is heard in a more vivacious strain. The “Finale” is the magnificent blending of the entire orchestra in a gradual crescendo. It has been compared to humanity, in that “it is as if all the sorrows of the uni verse have united and risen to one glorious triumph.” Beauty and sadness are the dominant notes in Tschaikowsky. Strauss’ “Emperor Waltzes” will be among the selections pre sented. The waltzes, written in honor of Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria, are full of the gaiety and brilliance of the old Viennese era. The “Overture” to “Russian and Ludmilla” will be the concert’s opening selection. The composition is one by Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka, whose work wa^ quite familiar to the court in the days of the Russian monarchy. Two rtussian ioik songs are in cluded in the program and will feature a piccolo solo by Dolph Siegrist. The “Berceuse for String” will be presented with a view to ward demonstrating the prevalent qualities of Russian music—swift ness and deep brilliance. The University symphony has been rehearsing two months for this concert. Sororities Pick Three Panhellenic President Billy John has announced the names of three additional sorority pledges.
