UniversityAlumi Gains Honors Merlin G. Dow, an Oregon gradu ate student, has received notifica tion that his two entries in the In ternational Textile Exhibition of 1946 have won first and fourth prizes in the printing division. Sponsored by the department of art, woman's college of the Uni versity of North Carolina, the an nual exhibition is open to com mercial, professional and amateur textile makers and designers all over the world. Dow received $100 first prize and $25 fourth prize, and the entries will go into the Exhibition’s permanent collection. Dow believes fabrics are archi texture, scale, space, and the tempo which took first prize was grey I blue,*abstract composition in line ' cn flat white linen, which he en titled, “Architectism.” His pu*r pose is to bring relations between interior design and architecture closer together, stressing color, txeture, scale, space, and the tempo of the times. The design is printed on the drapery materials by either the hand block or the silk screen process. While in London in 1945, h'e was doing abstract color studies for I paintings, and two of these were hung in the well-known Redfern Gallery. The* twenty-five-year-old graduate of the University returned to school to work for his master’s degree when lie was discharged in April of this year from the army. W.D. Smith Elected Officer of APCG Dr. W. D. Smith, head of geol ogy and geography department, has been elected vice president of the Association of Pacific Coast Geog raphers, an organization of 150 ex perts in geography, devoted to the interests of promoting geography throughout the Pacific Northwest. Phillip Church, professor of geog raphy at University of Washing ton, is president of the organiza tion. Dr. Smith has been an active member of the group for several years. He has contributed original research papers of technical value on Northwest geography. The annual meeting of the organ ization will take place sometime in the near futuue at a northern col lege, Dr. Smith said. ' Oregon Churches Plan Relief Drive A three-point program for im mediate overseas relief to be sent to Europe and Asia this winter was launched by the churches of Ore gon Sunday, according to Charles A. Sprague, former governor, and president of the Oregon Council of Churches. The drive, to be conducted through the appeal “Share the Penny—Save the Waste” will b>3 for cash to buy foodstuffs and clothing )f all kinds, and for gifts of money ’or heifers. All Protestant churches vill serve as collection centers. Gifts and material aid coming 'rom local communities will be sent ;hrough the Oregon Council Relief ;ommittee in cooperation with United Church Overseas relief. The issue, which was not passed by the senate, will be presented before the house at the next session of con gress. It would determine whether or not research in the social scienc es will be sponsoied by the govern ment. Implications of the vote were studied by Dr. Leeper and in his es timation prove that the Republican senators and the eastern area were against the bill.
