Instead of pretending that the exam is a test of student know ledge, let them openly admit that it is nothing more than a contest for grades. With that admission, they could drum up big scale business, and myriads of students would flock to take exams, pummelling the unfit in their hurry. Advertise. That’s the cue: post huge posters announc ing that an academic contest is to be held with grades as prizes. For example, the literature de partment could 'conduct a contest offering, say, five A’s, threto B pluses, seven B’s, and so forth as prizes for the winning entries— and every one a winner. They might use the following: “Complete in twenty-five words, or less, ‘I. like Rabelais because . . .’ Origi nality, not fancy penmanship will win.” The field is limitless. Then, too, they could take a hint from the quiz contests continuously floating around in the ether, or air, or wherever it is that they con tinuously float around. They could usher a student into a room and ask him a question. If he answers it properly, they could very easily say, “All right, now you have a D: do you want to try for a D plus?” With just a wee bit of imagina tion, we could really get the educa tional ball spinning like mad. The trouble is with the educators; they ought to get hep, be modern. What’s the matter, Prof, don’t you read the magazines, or listen to the radio ?
