First ROTC Head
Returns on Visit
Col. John Leader, organizer of the
first military training program on
the campus, is back this Homecom
ing weekend on one of his periodic
visits to the University.
In 1918, at the request of Univer
sity President Prince Campbell, the
colonel came here to form the first
officers’ training organization for
Oregon. The program grew into a
,tate-wide group of home guards
with about 100 recruits from Port
land and other points in Oregon. At
that time Colonel Leeder was one
of the best known figures in Ore
gon and still is a loyal supporter of
Oregon and Oregonians.
In the fall of the following year

with the colonel’s group as a foun
