    Newburn Talks
At Westminister
Speaking on “What Is Wrong
With the American University,'
Dr. Harry K. Newburn, president oi
the University, headed a forum
Sunday at Westminster house. Stu
dents, guests, and members of the
University attended.
After his introduction by Lloyd
R. Gilson, forum leader, Dr. New
burn proceeded to enumerate the
various departments of a modern
university and compared them with
older colleges. Dr. Newburn devel
oped his subject by reminding the
audience that many faults now exist
a result of an emergency and
that officials of American univer
sities hope to be rid of those faults
in due time.
Dr. Newburn stated that he be
lieves the returned veterans will,
by their previous experience and
present determination to learn the
more important aspects of college
life, condition universities to a high

These veterans can vitally affect
changes in American higher educa
tion.
When asked how he felt toward
the teachings of Dr. Robert M. Hut
chins of the University of Chicago,
in regard to higher education, Dr.
Newburn asserted that he could not
agree with some of the aspects of
Hutchins’s beliefs, particularly the
policy adopted by Chicago in regard
to competitive athletics.
President Newburn stated that
sports are essential in development
of students’ character and ability
to become better adjusted to socie
ty. He concluded that as a whole
the physical education system in
America is satisfactory.
In bringing-the forum discussion
to a close, Dr. Newburn stressed
his belief that better education must
be provided the student who is
ready to enter universities, and re
ferred to Oregon’s higher educa
tional requirements at the present
in regard to out-of-state applicants
for entrance.
Following the forum, Dr. New
burn discussed problems of higher
education with students and others
who wished to talk with him.

dium boots? They have weather
proof felt soles and wooley insides
for extra warmth. Some styles are
worn with, others without, shoes.
Even though we’re used to ban
danas as we are to “comp” assign
ments, how about wearing hoods
now and then for variety? Just
think, you can slip them on and off
easily and eliminate the knot that is
always coming untied. You won’t'
be out of style either, for hoods on
coats, jackets, and even dresses are
fashion news these days. Separate
hoods to match clothes you have
are easy to make too, if you’re am
bitious.
Whatever your style preference
is, be sensible. As most of us realize
(cough) it’s very easy (cough,
cough) to pick up a cold these days
(haaachoo)! Remember, we don’t
have the most sun-sational weather
in the world.

Monrovia, California is Marguer

included in their performances.
Art Major
The fourth member of the group,
and the only leader with previous
experience on an Oregon rally
squad is Pattie Beaton, auburn
haired Kappa Alpha Theta.
Pattie likes the system of having
boys lead the yells. “Last year the
squad was so large that it was diffi
cult to keep together. With the new
system, all the attention will be on
one person, and I hink it will be
more satisfactory,” she stated.
The tallest of the group, five foot
three and a half, Pattie’s a major in
art, with the emphasis on painting.

Really, the most amazing thing
about football is that all of the play

pants yet.
The crowd was funny too. Every

ing “Pigger” and raising a big fuss.
I guess a pigger must be a baby
pig, but I didn’t see any. The upper
classmen told me that all the live
stock in Oregon were up at OSC
anyway.
Futile Effort
Most of the players weren’t very
smart cither. Several times one of
those fellows would get the ball
when he was only a little way from
the goal post, but like a darned fool,
he’d grab the things and run for the
opposite one clear down at the oth
er end of the pasture. I don’t think
that was very smart.
Those football players are pretty
rough, and all the time someone
gets hurt. I think that the winning
team is the one that has the most
players able to stand at the end of
the game. That's what he announc
er means by “third down and eight
to go.”
Well, right now X have to run
down to the bridge to play Side—
I think I understand that a little
better.
