Smith is setting the pace for Duck hitters in the Northern Division conference race with a .367 average. Howe Field Defense Set for Orangemen Invasion Coach Howard Hobson inspected his defense yesterday and further ed plans for a counter-offensive in preparation for the scheduled in vasion of Howe field Saturday by the Oregon State college Beavers. The Duck mentor galloped his league leading nine through a brisk drill Thursday after a day’s layoff. Practice included an inter squad game and hitting drill, with John Day, left-handed hurler, who earned his letter here in 1943, of fering up the pitches against Hob son’s first line unit. Anticipating Orangeman Coach Ralph Coleman’s choice of Chuck Sauvain as starting moundsman for the Saturday tilt, Hobby pitch ed Day against the starting lineup to give them an opportunity to get —arstant at southpaw hurling. Sau vain, a freshman, has been Oregon State’s most effective hurler this season. Saltzman Given Nod At 3 p.m. Saturday when the Northern Division title series be gins, the Webfoot nine will bank its hopes on Hal Saltzman to turn back the Orange invaders. Saltz man has pitched in seven of Ore gon’s twelve league games. He has won six without a loss, while main taining an earned run average of .72. His victories have come at the expense of the three Northern Di vision clubs the Webfoots have tangled with so far this season. He won two games from each ol the three clubs. Coach Hobson plans one more sharpening up session this after noon to put his team in the best possible shape for the first Beaver clash. Bleachers have been erected along the right side of Howe field in preparation of the overflowing crowd which is expected to witness the first tilt of the season between the top-spot Ducks and the chal lenging Staters. Some Lineup Changes Oregon’s starting lineup for the Saturday tilt other than Saltzman, will have a couple of changes from previous league games. OREGON TRAIL PET CORRAL 35 W 11th Phone 3284 Beavers Win Field Events, Distances in Dual Meet By AL PIETSCHMAN Coach Doc Swan s Oregon State track team showed power in the distance runs and field events yesterday to overwhelm Oregon 80-51 in the 37th annual running of the Oregon-Oregon State track meet at Corvallis. The Beavers started the meet in fine style with their heavy weights completely outclassing the Oregon weight men in the ine snotput. Their milers grabbed all places in the long run, and at the end of the first two events the Aggies led 18-0! Double Win for Leicht Speedboy Jake Leicht was Ore gon’s individual star in the disas trous meet. Jake continued his un defeated record in the sprints by winning both the hundred and 220 yard dash. Showing nervous anxiety, Leicht jumped the gun once in the century, calmed down, hit the gun on the nose and bar reled in to the tape with a :10.2. Carl Maxey, close on Jake’s heels, garnered a second and Bob Laidlow, State runner, took the other place in the race. None of the times on the track were spectacular—all the runners were affected by the hard surface of the oval and times, from the 100 yard dash up, showed it in the results. tu jrirsi in roie vault Coach Bill Hayward, and Ore gon track fans crowded in the finish corner of the Bell field bleachers, received the shock of their life when they heard the re sult of th pole vault. Oregon had taken first place! Yes, Oregon had actually taken first place in the event that was the outstanding sore spot all season! Thanks to the per sistent efforts of Frank Dinges, newly recruited vaulter, the Web foots can ring up “extra” headlines proclaiming their salvation from an unsavory reputation in the pole vault.. Frank bested his OSC op ponent and won the high soaring event with a 11 foot 6 inch vault. Eyebrows were lifted too, when the OSC announcer reported the results of the javelin. Hitting par excellence form, Oregon's Bill Kydd threw the spear 193 feet 3 inches! This tremendous heave is by far the best posted in the con ference this season, and it looks as if Kydd is a cinch for a first in the conference meet next Saturday. Duck Lou Robinson, bested Web foot Dick Shelton by four inches to chalk up a third in the event. 1st, 3rd in 220 Oregon fans raised a mighty roar at the end of the 220, for Leicht had breezed across the finish first and Maxey had just lost second by a hair and was credited with third. The six points collected in this event boosted Ore gon’s total and the loudspeaker announced the standings—Oregon 46; Oregon State 44! This was the only time in the meet that Oregon had a lead. With the results of the discus coming in on the heels of the 220 the lead changed hands. The Staters had swept the orbit throwing event, shooting their score to 48 and leaving Oregon with the same 46. From that time on, the Beavers weren’t headed and went on in the two mile, broad jump, low hurdles and relay adding to their score. In these last five events Hay ward’s men were able to rack up only five points compared to twenty-seven for the Orange squad! Edwards Injured Hurdler Dave Edwards suffered the only injury of the day when he hit the ninth hurdle in the low hurdle event. An OSC man was just a step ahead of Wyn Wright and Edwards was only a fraction behind Wright when he hit the hurdle, sumersaulted thrrough the air, and hit the track. Down but not out, Dave got to his feet and in a true trackman’s style, finished the race even though he was out as far as places went. Wyn Wright copped first in the high hurdles to bring his total point garnering for the day to eight points. Wyn showed remark able form and speed as he cleared the uprights, and with Oregon fans cheering him on, beat State’s Eaton to the tape in a neck and neck race. Wright is one of the boys worth watching in the North west meet next week, too. Summary: Shotput: 1st, Reiman, 2nd, Stevens; 3rd Blackledge (all OSC). Distance—48 feet.
