seventeenth memorial address.

Museum Receives
Oriental Art Book
The University Museum library
announced this week the recent
addition of a set of six illustrated
volumes on the George Eumorfo
poulos collection; namely, Cata
logue of the Chinese, Korean and
Persian Pottery and Porcelain by
R. L. Hobson of the British muse
um.
George Eumorfopoulos was a
well-known British collector and
connoisseur of objects of Oriental
art, particularly the art of the Chi
nese. As an importer of Indian
commercial products he became in
terested in the art of the East and
began to collect Oriental art about
1900. He employed no dealers or
experts but did all his own buying
in Paris and London.
Although he kept his valuable
collection at the Chelsea home, he
never feared burglary, for all of
his pieces were too well known to
experts to be of any value to the
underworld. In 1935 he sold a part
of his collection to the Victor and
Albert and British Museums for
half a million dollars.
The early specimens described in
these books are all the result of
excavation for railways and con
sequently do not represent any ac
complisfiments such as one might
find in the contents of the tomb of
an emperor or high official. It is,
however, M r. Eumorfopoulos’s
claim that he has never bought a
piece which is of purely archaeo
logical interest. The numerous re
productions show that the artistic
level of the objects is indeed ex
ceedingly fine.
