Friendly Reception Awaits Ducks at Westminster By Don Brown There is a spot on the Oregon campus which as closely resembles ^ a home away-from-home as two homelike persons can make it. That place is Westminster house, 1414 Kincaid street. The persons who have made it a home for stu dents for the last 14 years are Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Bryant, known al ways as Aunt Alchie and Jim. Westminster house was built in 1925 by the Westminster founda tion of the Presbyterian church. But that does not limit its use only to students of the Presbyterian de nomination. Every student at the University of Oregon is welcome there at any time, any day, re gardless of religious belief. No Living Organization "Isn't Westminster house a liv ing organization for girls?" one student asked recently. When told that it is not a girls’ dorm, he was surprised, and when informed of the many facilities that go to make it a home for students, he said he’d drop over to see what —he could find there. "Westminster is an open house resembling a small student union building, and in the absence of a union on the campus in past years, many students have used it as such. Today men from all parts of the world write letters to the Bryants to thank them and the Westminster foundation for hav ing provided such a homelike place where they could go to find re laxation from studies. . ¥ HEUOH UTEITTEOS 61 E. Then there is the student kit chen, where students can cook their meals or can bring their lunches during the day. For those who seek religion, Westminster offers religious dis cussion each Sunday morning and evening, held by local ministers and University laymen. Also, dur ing the week, there are various religious activities. The Bryants wish to impress upon University students that no one need belong to any special re ligious denomination to be eligi ble to visit Westminster. Anyone at any time is welcome. On Monday nights there are fireside sings at Westminster. Stu dents are invited to participate in the singing, which is from 9:30 to 10:15. The more persons who come, the more enjoyable is tne singing. One of the cherished memories of former students of any college is the memory of group singing, par ticularly when gathered around a fireplace. There are discussion groups at Westminster, in which all students take part. Perhaps University students do not solve many of the problems of the world while they attend institutions of higher edu cation, but the training of an ac tive mind that always seeks truth is an important phase of learning. ,A bulletin is published bi-weekly which any student can obtain at Westminster house for the asking. It tells the activities each week and can more thoroughly give the plan for the. week than is possible here. Westminster house was founded to provide recreation with a pur pose for all students. That pur pose has always been to teach youth to be good citizens of the world by allowing them to become better acquainted with one another in a friendly atmosphere where everyone is treated equally. Jim and Aunt Alchie ask every student to drop in at the house for a few moments at least. It is a place where everyone can feel at home. If you don’t like it there, you can leave. But, like so many hundreds of students in past years, you will probably stay; and the memories of the friendly at mosphere there will always live with you.
