Sermon
in
Stone
The architects who designed, the beautiful cathedrals were mighty
preachers. They may never have stood in pulpits and spoken from sacred
texts . , . but in their own way they revealed truth to generations.
They spoke not with words, but with columns and arches and domes
and spires . . . they gave the world arrows of granite and marble . . .
mighty, massive, lasting arrows pointing always toward God.
LOOK UP! REACH UP! RISE UP!
■ This is the theme of traditional church architecture.- This sermon in stone
is preached to the human eye in the millions of houses of Christian worship
all over the world. And the towering spires of the cathedrals proclaim it
no more effectively than the humble steeples of our own churches, the
arched roofs of our village chapels.
Our religion is more than belief in God. It is the Power that lifts our eyes,
our thoughts, our lives above the drab levels of mere human existence In
he worship and work of our Churches we look up ... reach up... rise up to
heights of character and achievement for which we were born.
