Gloom descended Sunday when “The Fellas,’’ handsomest, per sonality-pluS, much-spoiled, super lative feline of Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Jermain, was carried to a local small-animal hospital with a rag ing fever of 107.6, after having displayed increasing feebleness and diminishing interest in the world about him for the preceding three days. At the hospital he was pro nounced “a very sick cat,” and the ailment was diagnosed as cat distemper. Attendants took no stock in a suggestion that “The Fellas” suffered from injured dig nity resulting from a tumble Thursday into the fishpond in the J. H. Gilbert backyard. Meanwhile his various absorbing projects, such as window-watching, battling with the formidable “Oscar,” resident of the same building, and 18-hour daily custody of the various feline athletic grounds of the surrounding Alder street area, were in a condition of non-direction for lack of a prime mover. Even the one re maining (of three) catnip mouse was lonesome. Some indication of the charac ter cat’s chances for recovery was expected late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
