Sherry Ross, Sig Eps Win Intramural Tilts Anderson's 14 Points Leads Dorm to Victory Over Campbell; Shmo-Hawks Lose, 20 to 28 The intramural league battled through another round of play yesterday and when the smoke settled Sigma Phi Epsilon was declared the winner over the Shmo-Hawks 28 to 20 and the Sherry Ross lads had smothered the Campbell club com pletely with a 31 to 19 victory. The Greeks, behind the ten point pitching of Stevenson, commanded the game throughout the contest. The Sig Eps grabbed a 19 to b halftime lead and were satisfied with holding the Hawkers to 14 tallies the second half while they garnered nine more to boost their total. Goldstein Nets 10 Goldstein netted 10 counters to tie Stevenson for scoring honors but the classy Hawk guard didn’t have the support from the floor that Stevenson received from his team mates Carl and Will, who tossed in seven and six respectively. —In the night cap between the two> Independents, Sherry Ross was never seriously threatened after building up a 16 to 8 half time advantage on the Campbell Clubbers. When the fourth quar ter rolled into action Robson slipped in two quick baskets from out around the key hole but his individual efforts were not enough to cope with the fast-moving dorm boys. Anderson Leads Sherry Big- Bob Anderson was too much for the Clubbers as he controlled the backboards and carried the scoring load for Sherry. The blonde lad from Scappose scattered 14 digits through the hemp. Lineups: Sigma Phi Ep. Schmo-Hawks —“A” (28) “A” (20) Will (6) .F.Roth Smithrood (4) ..F. (4) Williams Carl (7) .C. Swimmers Prep For Next Meet With Beavers Placid waters in the Corvallis pool at Oregon State college will be churned into effervescence Sat urday afternoon when visiting Webfoots splash against Beavers in a return swim meet of a home and-home series, with the hosts attempting a reversal of form from the 56 to 10 trouncing the Staters received at Eugene. Coach Vaughn Corley will send practically the same men to splash against the Beavers in all of the nine events. Cub Callis and Bob Prowell, lettermen on the Duck's roster, will rate as*the strongest contestants. Ducking Ace Freshman Alden Sundlie will test new time-setting against the OSC swim men in the 100 anc Tuesday's Intramural Schedule BASKETBALL 4:00 Zeta Hall “B” vs. Campbell Club “B” 4:45 Omega “A” vs. Delta Up silon “A” HANDBALL 4:00 Yeomen vs. Beta Theta Pi Racy News BY LAV The Oregon country is finally getting out of the “bush-leagues” with regards to horse-racing! That Portland will soon sport a $600,000 oval is welcome news to the North west’s frustrated turf addicts. We entertain hopes they will be far sighted and arrange for purses large enough to lure a few “name” horses. The exasperating lack of nag news in the local sheets is something else that in all proba bility will be remedied, and who knows, perhaps Oregon's stalwart sons will get a look at that grand old publication—the Racing Form. We’re not trying to turn solid citizens from the paths of virtue, don’t get the wrong ideja! The idea that one goes to the races to lose his shirt went out with the bustle. Racing today, carefully guarded and supervised, is, as al ways, one of the most thrilling of all spectator sports. Buzfuz, the horse that Helis had practically given to him for $2,000 won another big race at Hialeah (in Miami) last Friday. The purse brought his total earnings to over $78,000. Down Santa Anita way, they’re all shouting the praises of Don Conejo, a two-year-old full brother of “the people horse”.El Lobo. Fri day he broke the world’s record for three furlongs, skimming the straight course in :32 3-5. Johnny Longden was aboard with 122 pounds. If this little Cal-bred can stand the grind of a route, you’ll hear from him again. This is the first time in fifteen years that a world’s record has been broken by a West coast bred horse. Another item of proof that this fair land of ours is slipping on long trousers at last. 220-yard free-style events. Several weeks ago the Duckling swimmer tcok first place in both these events. Val Robbins will rate as the chief competitor on the 10-foot board for the Webfoots, and will also swim the 200-yard breast stroke. Bob Hiatt will be counted on for fast action in the sprint races. Both the Ducks and Beavers have met the northern division championship team from the Uni versity of Washington since their first meet. The Huskies downed both by impressive scores, then splashed out a win over the Wash ington State natatorium aces. Sergeant: Why aren’t you work ing? Private: I didn’t see you coming. BASKETS LIKE THIS HELP Oregon-Washington basketball action is shown here during the hectic Northern division series at McArthur court over the week-end. Dick Wilkins, Oregon’s ace forward, is shown here scoring while Referee Tim McCullough watches the play carefully. Players in the action shot are, left to right, Bob Jorgensen (W-6), Ken Hays (O), Norm Dalthorp (W-ll), Chuck Sheaffer (W), Wilkins (10), Bob Hamilton (O), and Le Don Henson (W). Emerald A Duck Sez - - Sez He By Lynn Smith Marvin Rasmussen, returning veteran and one of the up-and coming players on Oregon’s team, is the Duck being discussed in to day’s issue of the Emerald. This twenty-year-old, lanky forv/ard has surely done his part towards speeding up victories for the noted Webfoot quintet. Basketball is not a new ac tivity for Bass, as he is affec tionately called by his friends, because throughout his high school days he played ball for Franklin high team in Port land. Besides being an ali'-city star for two consecutive years, he also had the honors of be ing student body president and class president for his fresh man, sophomore, and junior years. Oregon for Hobby Rass is a freshman this term, and a P. E. major. The main rea son that he chose the University of Oregon in preference to other schools in the northwest is that he particularly wanted to play ball under Coach Hobbie Hobson’s di rection. Since his arrival here last term, he has done exactly that, and has duly earned the high praise that has been given him. When he first began playing bas ketball for the Webfoot team, Marvin was on the second team, and now, because of his genuine interest in seeing his team make the grade, he is on the first string. Next year will certainly find him as he is new, one of the spark plugs of the team. Male Interests Rass’s interests in life are very similar to those of all the other “he” Ducks on the campus, and so naturally dancing and girls are at the top of his list. At present his love life consists of a certain little Pi Phi, but this romance is not as yet too serious, or fatal. The lanky easaba forward is an all-around in all phases of athletics. Baseball is his fav orite, besides basketball, but as yet he hasn’t decided whether to go out for the team next term, even though he was a curve ball specialist during his high school: days. After graduation from the Uni versity, Rass wants particularly to coach his two favorite sports, baseball and basketball, in some high school here on the west coast. If his coaching days are anything like his playing days his career j will surely be a success. Hula dancer: A shake in the i grass.
