    Blackout Cancels Dudes’
Saturday Evening Shaves
rsy bui Yates
A number of living organizations
on the campus were plunged into
"pandemonium last Saturday night
by a dire stroke that suddenly cut
off their electricity and sent them
into a total blackout. The blow
fell a few minutes after six, catch
ing many Ducks, some on their
second pieces of pie, others rush
ing through- preparations for im
portant Saturday evening engage
ments.
The Emerald has undertaken an
intensive quest to ascertain the
underlying cause of this catastro
phic misfortune, which resulted in
numerous Oregon men going to
meet their women with slashed
faces, five o’clock shadows, and
worse. The beardless gals seemed
to have fared slightly better than

the men on this scor,e but they
too had their little inconveniences.
Dudes Skip It
The chaos, which reigned for
about 45 minutes, was only partly
alleviated by a few candles, and
some men even resorted to shaving
by the light of a match. Such nice
ties as shined shoes, brushed teeth,
and cleaned fingernails were aban
dones altogether.
The possibility of this devilish
trick being perpetrated by Aggie
vandals, infuriated at the. Beaver
defeat Friday night, has not been
overlooked. Efforts are being made
by the Emerald to track down all
possible clues, but as yet no defi
nite evidence has been found.
Mechanical Villain
The local light company believes
that the trouble may have been
caused by a crane, working on
the campus housing project, which
crashed into a power line Saturday.
But the Emerald sleuths have dis
counted this theory. A more fiend
ish motive appears to underlie the
calamity.
Among the houses blanketed by
darkness were John Straub, Beta
Theta Pi, Chi Psi, Delta Delta Del
ta, Gamma Phi Beta, University
House, and McArthur court.
Apple-Polish Gets
Official Y Okay
The first of a series of faculty
student teas to be sponsored by the
campus YWCA will be held Fri
day afternoon from 4 to 5 at the
YWCA bungalow, Dedo Misley,
general chairman for the affair,
announced today.
All housemothers, faculty mem
bers, and students are invited to
drop in for tea and coffee, and
members of the “Y” are urged to
invite the teachers of their 3 o’
clock classes.
Apple polishing, according to
committee chairmen, will be not
only condoned, but encouraged, and
plans for bigger and better get
togethers of this kind in the fu
ture will depend upon the amount
of interest shown in the first tea
by both faculty and students.
Hostess Chariman Jean Camp
bell will be assisted by Shirley
Minea, Lynne Renick, and Jeanne
Hirschbuhl. Marge Fisher, assisted
by Carolyn Jenks, is in charge of
clean-up, and background music
for the tea will be provided by
Mary Joy Ham. Mary Carnes,
Mardelle Nelson, Mary Louise Sex
ton, and Beverly James comprise
the refreshment committee.
