Whereas and whereby, Willie
Fep was named the fighter of the
year, it is the contention of en
thusiasts in the world of fisticuffs,
that there arc more suitable con
tenders for that hall of fame.
Billy Fo.x, Negro light
lieavyweight from Philadel
phia, not long out of the serv
ice, was the knock-out king
for 1945. He took part in some
30 odd fights and won all of
them via the knock-out route.
Tank Fights
In all probability, the majority
of these bouts were against stum-,
hie bums of one variety or an
other, but some of these were
against some fair-to-middling pugs
in the middle-Atlantie sector.
The top fight of the year, ac
cording to sports writers, was the
initial contest between welter
weight champion, Freddie Coch
rane, just out of tire navy, and
“Rocky” Graziano, current king of
the middleweight class. It started

out to look like other Cochrane
battles, wherein the redhead made
Rocky look like a stablemate for
the first eight rounds, giving a
beautiful boxing lesson to the
Brooklyn boy.
Rocky Hangs One
During the fatal ninth round
Rocky caught up with his more
aggressive adversary and had
him on the verge of a knock
out with a devastating attack
that rocked Cochrane, and in
the tenth Rocky put him to
sleep for good.
The bout kept the crowd in a
state of hysteria throughout. Gra
ziano has managed through some
what difficult circumstances and
trials to become the most im
proved boxer of the year, circum
venting his passion for chilling his
opponent with brawling tactics,
and leaving much to be said about
his boxing ability.
KO Specialist
Out of the six major battles in
which he has participated this past
year, he has won them all handily
by knock-outs, and was all set to
emblazon a new record at the Gar
den last week against Sunny
Horne, in his quest of the middle
weight crown. He had to go all of
the way to emerge victorious with
a hard fought decision.
Among his victims for the
year, were Billy Arnold of
Philadelphia in three rounds,
considered an upset in fistic
circles, the late'Bummy Davis
in four, the cagy New Yorker,
Harold Green in three and
Cochrane, twice in ten. Maybe,
next year; maybe not.

Rally Squad’s Yell Contest
Launched; Students Eager
Campus approval of the rally
squad’s contest for new yells was
expressed in a survey taken this
week by Mickey Davies, contest
chairman, who announced that
boxes placed in the Co-op, Side,
and the Falcon will be emptied
twice daily to provide room for
the large number of entries ex
pected.
Any student is eligible to com
pete. Ideas for yells should be writ
ten out and dropped into the
boxes. The suggestions should be
explained as fully as possible to
enable the rally squad to put the
yells into action. The name and
address of the contestant, must be
included with each entry, and no
limit as to the number of entries
per student has been set.
In gathering a concensus of
opinion on the contest, Davies re
ceived the following comments:
Body Radford: I think it’s ter
rific because the yells these days
seem monotonous.
Lois Roder: I think we need
new yells, and sure hope this con
test brings results.
Ron Babcock: A good way to
reflect different types of yells from
all over the country.
Stan Prouty: For three bucks
I might even write something my
self.
Phil Dana: Prizes are too small
but a good idea. (Dear Phil: The
rally squad funds are down to 13
dollars. We’ll be seeing you at an
executive council meeting for more
dough. Mickey).
Shirley Jones: I think a bunch

Doris Spearrow: The fact that"
yells will be originated by students
now on the campus means we'll
all feel more a part of the spirit
of the yells.
Bob Reynolds: That’s the way
other yells were found, and we
should be able to do even better
this time.
Vic Selman: The contest gives
everyone a chance to feel that he
has more a part in the cheering.
Joe Kasmeyar: It sounds won
derful, if everyone will co-operate.
