Hanson Tops Scoring Column With 73 Basketball Loopings Vince Hanson, last season’s scoring ace for the nation, re sumed his normal pace to take the lead in the Northern divi sion Pacific Coast conference. A tabulation of the-individual points made in this week’s University of Washington, Washing ton State games gave Hanson a total of 73 points. The six-foot, nine-inch Cougar center now tops Fred Quinn of Idaho, who has held the scoring honors since the start of the conference, by 21 points. He also boasts an average of 18 points per game as compared to Quinn’s 10.4 average. However, this count does not include Friday and .Saturday night’s Idaho, Washing Senators Threat American Pennant The “Old Fox” Clark Griffith, who has brought to fame such stars as Walter Johnson, Joe Cronin, Roger Peckinpaugh, Stan Covelskie and “Bucky” Harris, has come out with the threat of an nexing the American League Pen nant for ’46. In addition to the array of talent that he displayed in ’45 in copping second place he has such returning stars as Cecil TraVis at short, “Buddy” Lewis at the Key stone sack, Stan Spence in center, Jake Early behind the plate, - t ‘JMickev” Vernon on first, and a formidable array of hurlers, led by Early Wynn, Milo Candini and LeFebve, all regular winners, and out and out steller performers. Southern Bookie With their latest acquisition, Jeff. Heath, from the Cleveland Indians and the year’s up - and coming rookie from Chatanooga of the Southern Association, Gil Coan, supporting Spence in the outfield, the Nats shape up as having the most powerful outfield in the cir cuit. Their base-stealing star, George Washington Case, who has been nursing a bad shoulder, and who slumped the latter part of the season, will be good trade bait for the Senators, having been sup planted in the lead off role by George Myatt. Myatt has jumped to the regular second base spot, v and has been the spark plug of club throughout their belated drive for the pennant. Also due for the hatchet is Emil “Dutch” Leonard, the knuckle-ball artist, who would still be valuable to one of the teams in the league for another season or two, but who has been ailing and aging of late. Upper Willamette Ski Runs Begin The Upper Willamette winter sports association will sponsor a weekly run of buses to ski country starting tomorrow at 8 a.m. when the first bus will leave from Hendershott’s sporting goods store on Willamette. Bus time from Eugene to the upper Willamette area will take ^ two hours. There will be a stop over at McCredie Springs. All necessary equip ment can be rented there. ton games. Should Quinn be able to collect those 21 points in these two games he will again be in the lead. Stan Williamson and Reedy Berg of Oregon are also well in the race for scoring honors. Williamson, although he stands ninth in respect to total points amassed, holds down the number three slot as far as averages go with a 10.3. Oregon State is the only one of the five teams in the conference that does not have a man in the top ten. But as said before this does not include Friday and Satur day’s games. The leading ten scorers in the circuit follow: Hanson, WSC. 4 29 15 5 73 Quinn, Idaho . 5 18 16 10 52 Pyne, Idaho . 5 19 7 14 45 Henson, Wash. 4 18 8 4 44 Mortenson, Idaho .. 5 13 13 14 39 Dalthorp, Wash. 4 15 8 4 88 Arndt, WSC. 4 14 7 11 35 Phoenix, Idaho . 5 14 > 6 13 34 Williamson, Ore. 3 10 11 6 31 Berg, Ore.. 3 14 2 7 SO Fucks rock (Continued from page four) tooted in the contest by referees Emil Piluso and Hal Eustis as they did an excellent job of keeping the fast game under control. McGrath Shines Oregon States Bernie McGrath played an outstanding game for the losers and when he was car ried off the court by Beaver train er Doc Allman, the plucky little guard received a standing ovation from the audience in appreciation of the fine game he played. Bernie took individual scoring honors for the evening with a total of 16 points. For Coach Howard Hobson’s . quintet it would be hard to single out one outstanding player during the evening. The Webfoots played inspiring ball throughout the contest. Cap tain Bob Hamilton saw a few minutes action in last night’s game but is still handicapped with his injured leg. In 1942 the Webfoots were known as the Gail Bishop’s Return Boosts WSC Chances Cougars of Washington State, who have been struggling along in the 1946 basketball season with the services of Northern division top scorer Vince Hanson, added a playmate yesterday with the announced return of Gail Bishop, top scorer of the nation last year. Bishop has been playing with the Fort Lewis Warriors this season until his discharge was an nounced yesterday. Last year he tallied 1197 points for the War riors, and set a new individual one game record of 62 points while competing in the national AAU tournament at Denver, Colo. Enrolls on 28tti The rangy basketeer will enroll at Washington State on January 28 in time for the 1946 season with the Cougars. Playing at Washing ton State three years ago, the automatic scorer will start a 30 day furlough Monday. Rippling with smiles, Cougar Coach Jack Friel said that recent war department directives cover ing Bishop’s discharge will permit his release from the army by February 20. Friel stated, “Gail will work out with the squad meanwhile, and he is slated to re tain his old forward post in the next game with Oregon State college on January 28. Busted Beak's Field Busted Tom “Rocky” Graziana, Brook lyn’s middleweight champion of the world, showed the fistic fans that he is still master of the welter and middleweight belters, by bat tering out a 10-round decision from George “Sunny” Horne of Niles, Ohio, who hasn’t been knocked out cleanly by any alleged middle weight of this boxing era. Horne has been TKO’d twice, having had to go out the hard way due to cut eyes in two frays, but has come back to win clean-cut decisions from these two, and gone on to become the ranking chal lenger of the middleweight class. Tonight was the first major fis tic endeavor by Rocky in the mid dies,^ all of his previous quests having been with the welters, of which he had won the last five at the Garden via the knock-out route, tying the record set by “Hammmering Hank” Henry Arm strong, holder of three world championship boxing titles at one time. The Garden was packed to ca pacity, and such notables as Babe Ruth, the King of Swat, Gus Les nevich, winner over Kahut at Port land just recently via the knock (Please turn to paye seven) Best swimming team this side of the Mississippi." Beavers Unknown Coach Reg Floor, mentor of the Beaver natators, places his team as definitely of unknown quality. He has chosen a traveling squad of 14 men to compete against the Ducks today. Webfoots boast of two return ing lettermen on their tank roster. Bob Prowell, free-styler and back stroker, will team with Cub Callis, free-styler, for what Coach Corley hopes is the added experience need ed to turn his squad into a win ning combination. Other Games There is only one other home appearance scheduled for the Ducks in the 1946 swimming season. On January 25, the Uni versity of Washington Huskies will arrive for competition in the men’s pool on the Webfoots’ waddling grounds.
