THE
Dope
Bucket
tttttttttttttTi
Bv WINSTON CARL
Well, the 19i46 Pacific Coasl
conference is getting underway, sc
it is time to get the “Dope Bucket’
out and make a few .predictions.
First, let us look the situation
over at Corvallis, where the Ore
gon State -Beavers tangle with the
Idaho Vandals. Without having
•seen either team -this - season, a
hunch says that each team will cop
a game in the week-end fiesta.
Give Vandals One
The reason for giving Idaho one
of the two games is due to the
fact that she will put her strongest
team in years on the floor, includ
ing 6 foot, 9 inch Jack Phoenix,
Fred Quinn, 1943 star, and Len
Ryne, last year’s leading scorer
for the Vandals. Oregon State, on
the other hand, will have four new
men in uniform, namely Glen
Warren and Erland Anderson from
the 1943 squad, and Larry West
and Dick Srait from last year’s
Orange outfit. However it will
probably take more than two days
for these players to get in shape,
so the defense rests with Oregon
State one game, Idaho one game...
Cougars All the Way
In the other conference opening
series at Seattle the Washington
Huskies take on the Cougars from
out Puliman way. This series
ought to end with two wins in the
WSC column, mainly due to the
efforts of two men, high scoring
6' 8” Vince Hanson and dynamic
Tiny Arndt,, who only weighs 230
pounds and stands 6’ 5”. Washing
ton, on the other hand, will put
"7orth a very well balanced outfit
of both new and old players, but
still the Cougars should be able to
outmatch them in both games.
Golden Bears Reap
Dcwn Cal way the Bears tangle
on their home court with the
Bruins from UCLA, which
should find both games won by the
home team. This pick is based on
the excellent pre-season record of
the Golden Bears, who so far have
won twelve and lost only one.
Those Birds Again
Although the game will be over
when you read this article, this
prediction was made before the
game. U.B.C. over Willamette by
miles. Need I say more.
'Hoodoo’ Highway

The south Santiam highway is
open to travel leading in to this
favorite winter playground. For
the first time this season both ski
lifts will be in operation this week
end.
A large group of students at
tended the meeting of the Ski Club
Wednesday evening in Chapman to
discuss the proposed overnight ski
trip to Hoodoo bowl January 12.
With continued good weather this

Bleachers Built
As Season Nears
Rabid followers of the Webfoots’
Casaba squad have more than in
sured their right to v/atch all home
games in McArthur court— few of
the reserved seats in the upper
stands remain .for onlookers of the
rapid styled game of basketball.
Construction work on temporary
bleachers for the faculty and stu
dents will echo the Igloo with raps
of carpenter’s hammer Monday
morning. Male students will sit on
the east side, coeds on the west
side and stands for the faculty will
be erected in the southwest corner.
According to official estimates
the 1946 basketball season prom
ises to be the most successful in
Oregon history. The Casaba squad
take will be a follow-up of the ’45
football season which saw more
sports enthusiasts turn the tills
than ever before.
, SCRIBES NOTICE

daily reminder that members of
the sports staff and prospective

Prep Preliminaries
Battle for Berths
Prep hoopsters this week began
the preliminary battles for berths
in the state basketball tournament
to be held in Salem March 12 to 16.
The 16 prep high school districts
in Oregon will each send one team
as representative to the tourna
ment. With more than two months
to prepare for the championship
contest, no team in any district
has as yet a secure berth.
Battles will rage on the hard
wood courts this month and next to
decide which high schools will be
invited to Salem. Last year Wash
ington high of Portland won the
state championship in the four day
contest.
Jackson Lost
On China Flight
Word was received recently on
the Oregon campus of the death
of Lt. Morrie Jackson, former
football player and co-captain of
the Webfoot squad that played the
University of Texas in 1941, while
serving in action with the Marine
air corps in the China area.
Jackson was lost last October
while on a flight from the Philip
pines to Okinawa. His flight of
planes was on its way to China
with the stop to Okinawa sche
duled enroute. The formation flew

Omega Claims
Volleyball Title
By virtue of their two straight
victories over the Barons, 15 to 4
and 15 to 8, Omega Hall won the
championship volleyball playoff,
thus completing intramural activ
ity for the fall term. Omega's
team compiled a total of 150 points
to cop scoring honors for the
volleyball season, while the Barons
trailed with 135 points and Sigma
hall amassed an aggregate of 120
counters.
The other three league entries,
Campbell Co-op, Independent
Seven and Sherry Ross, tied for
fourth place with 92 points apiece.
Players on the winning Omega
team were, T. Molatore, W. Pick
ens, F. Tynan, B. Reed and D. Van
Zandt.
they emerged some minutes later
Lt. Jackson’s plane was missing.
Searches by other planes and' navy
destroyers proved futile.
Morrie Jackson was first-string
guard on the ’41 team, coming
west from his home state of Texas
via Pasadena junior college. After
leaving Oregon to enter pre-flight
school at St. Mary’s, Jackson
again played for Tex Oliver while
Oliver tutored the navy aggrega
tion from the bay district in 1942.
Jackson married Muriel Stevens,
an Oregon co-ed, and is also sur
vived by a 7-months-old son.

Vet Players
By BOB REED
In contrast wartime years,
major league clubs are again over
flowing with seasoned ball players.
Players of all calibre are being re
leased from the service tevery day,
and by the first day of spring train
ing clubs in both leagues should
have players three deep in every
position!
But what to do with all these
players ? Trade, sell, release, ship
back to the minors, or just what ?
Trade for Strength
In the eyes of club owners and
managers, now is the time to
strengthen weak positions on their
team by trades. With this abund
ance of good performers, baseball
fans will witness a winter that will
see many of their favorite players
traded or sold to other clubs.
Since dealing in ball players is a
commerce in a commodity, just
like jewelry and nylon stockings,
major league magnates are subject
to the same financial conditions
that are preventing other con
cerns from selling their goods.
New Taxes Open
As soon as the new federal tax
setup becomes effective, and that
was two days ago, the player mart
will pick up amazingly. Trans
actions which normally would have
been completed during' the major
league's annual meeting in Chicago
in December will be consummated.
In fact, there is a strong belief
that quite a few deals were made
in the meetings, subject to an
nouncement as soon as the 1946
tax picture became operative.
So good for the future, let us
take a look at a few of the big
transactions that have occurred so
far this winter. The most recent
swap sent infielder Eddie Lake to
the Detroit Tigers for first base
man Rudy York. This was a
straight player deal with no cash
involved.
