Nurse Recalls Experiences In Army Service Overseas By JEANETTE GRANT Welcomed back to the infirmary nursing staff after serving four years with the army’s 46th division, Miss Leota Bradley in her starched white uniform and cap gives no visible indica tions of her experiences in the African and European war zones. Miss Bradley took her nurses training in St. Vincents hospital in Portland, then spent three years with the University of Oregon infirmary before entering the service. * j.n i»4u sne enlisted and was stationed at Fort Lewis for a year before joining the 46th, a division which was started by Colonel J, Guy Strohm and Lt. Colonel Harriet Dickson. The unit was started at the University of Oregon and recruited 100 nurses, most of whom were Oregon wo men; a smaller group included out of-state nurses taking training in Oregon, and the remainder of the unit consisted of 65 officers, most ly doctors, and a large detachment of enlisted men. North Africa After one year of basic training ^St Fort Riley, Kansas, the unit went to Oran, North Africa, where they set up a hospital. The 46th did not arrive until after Rommel’s break-through so little ■action was seen. At one time the hospital had 1500 patients, mostly American, and a few Italian malaria victims. Miss Bradley said that the malaria was pretty well under control when they arrived. This was due to the work of men who had landed before them, who had wiped out most of the mosquito breeding places and improved the sanitary conditions. The hospital, consisting only of a series of tents, presented many difficulties; nevertheless, the regu lar procedure of an average hos pital was carried on. The person —Jiel lived in tents, and the enlisted men improvised the only two showers in camp for the nurses. Sanitation was very good consid ering the conditions under which they had to operate. Barracks Hospital Leaving Africa in September, 1944, the division went to southern France. They landed in Saint Tropez bay, and traveled in con voy to Besancone, where they established another hospital. Instead of tents they were Winter Term Calendar (Continued from page one) W.A.A. ex council meeting Rally squad meeting Wednesday, January 28 Y.W.C.A. They converted stables and tents into extra space to take care of 3200 French sol diers. Taking care of the soldiers be hind the French 1st Army was their new task; however, at one time they had 2000 Russian men that had been liberated, to care for. Most of the Russians had tuberculosis. In France, Captain Bradley had the opportunity to see some of the country, as they took sections of her group on turs. She took trips to Paris and Versailles before leaving. Having enough points for dis charge Miss Bradley is back in the old routine; however, many of her friends were pulled out of the divi sion and sent to the South Pacific. A few were sent home with her, and the remainder are on their way home now. --- / Oregon ^Emerald STAFF THIS ISSUE Business staff— Betty Setser Bill Setser Don Persinger Annamae Winship “Mailing staff— Betty Setser Bill Setser Annamae Winship Don Persinger Bob Chapman Reporters this issue— June Goetze Vesta Sargent Laura Olson Chuck de Ganahl BG Simmons Jeanette Grant Bob Chapman Tickets on sale at the Co-op for the Senior class “Music Box Ball.’’ bell club Hendricks open house Chi Omega faculty guest Alpha Chi Omega open house Kappa Kappa Gamma open house Alpha Phi open house Delta Gamma open house Thursday, January Si Kappa Kappa Gamma faculty din ner Bally squad meeting Friday, February 1 Basketbajl-Oregpn vs. Washing ton, here Alpha hall skating party Y.W.C.A.tY.M.C.A. open house Hilyard house dance Sigma Kappa fireside dance , University house dance Hawthorne house dance Campbell club open house Saturday, February 2 Dads’ Week-end Basketball—Oregon vs. Washing ton, here Sunday, February 3 Town and Gown Alpha Omicron Pi faculty dinner Monday, February 4 Heads of Houses meeting Tuesday, February 5 W.A.A, ex council meeting Wednesday, February 6 Y.W.C.A. activators Alpha Xi Delta open house Kappa Alpha Theta open house Sigma Kappa dessert Delta SSeta dessert Gamma Phi Beta open house Alpha Gamma Delta open house Phi Theta meeting Thursday, February 7 Faculty tea—University house Friday, February 8 Coed Capers Saturday, February 9 Judson house party Gamma Alpha Chi, Alpha Delta Sigma all campus dance Sunday, February 10 Town and Gown Kappa Alpha Theta dinner for Newburns Monday, February 11 Tuesday, February 12 Basketball Oregon vs. W.S C. here Kwama meeting 6:30 W.A.A. ex council meeting Wednesday, February 13 Pi Beta Phi open house Alpha Delta Pi dessert Alpha Omicron Pi ex. dessert Rebec house dessert Chi Omega faculty dinner Thursday, February 14 Heart Hop (afternoon) Sigma Kappa faculty dinner Friday, February 15 Alpha Xi Delta dinner for deans All co-op ice skating party Alpha Chi Omega house dance Alpha Gamma Delta house dance W.A.A. fun night Y.W.C.A.-Y.M.C.A. open house Kappa Alpha Theta house dance Alpha hall house dance Campbell club house dance Saturday, February 16 Beaux Arts ball Susan Campbell house dance Delta Gamma house dance Orides dance Sigma Kappa house dance Delta Zeta house dance Alder hal} house dance Sunday, February 17 Town and Gown Gamma Hall faculty tea Monday, February 18 Heads of Houses meeting Tuesday, February 19 W.A.A. ex council meeting 4:00 Rally squad meeting Wednesday, February 20 Y.W.C.A. activators Susan Campbell open house Hilyard faculty dinner Alder hall dessert Inter-dorm dessert Chi Omega open house Phi Theta meeting Thursday, February 21 Sigma Kappa faculty dinner Friday, February 22 Delta Gamma bridge Yqeman dance Zeta hall dance Y,W.C.A.-Y.M.C.A. open house Alpha Phi house dance Gamma Phi Beta house dance Pi Beta Phi house dance W.A.A.-Orchesis Saturday, February 23 Frosh glee Outing club hike • Sunday, February 24 Town and Gown Alpha Omicron Pi faculty dinner Monday, February 25 Tuesday, February 26 Kwama meeting 6:30 W.A.A. ex council meeting Orchesis election Wednesday, February 21 Y.W.C.A. activators Prides dessert Alpha hall dessert Kappa Kappa Gamma open house Alpha Chi Omega open house Alpha Phi open house W-A.A, telegraphic swimming meet Thursday, February 28 Faculty dinner-Highland House W,A.A. all star hasfcetball Rally squad meeting Friday, March 1 University House wiener roast Zeta Tau Alpha house dance Sigma hall house dance Rebec house dance Kappa Kappa Gamma house dance Y.M.C.A.-Y.W.C.A. open house W.A.A. final membership meeting Saturday, March 2 Basketball Oregon vs. O.S.C. there Sunday, March 3 Town and Gown Alpha Phi faculty dinner Monday, March 4 Heads of Houses meeting Delta Gamma founder’s day ban quet Election Amphibian officers Tuesday, March 5 Kwama meeting 6:30 W.A.A. ex council Wednesday, March 6 Phi Theta meeting Y.W.C.A. activators Alpha Xi Delta dessert Hilyara dessert Highland dessert Gamma hall open house Hawthorne house open house Campbell club open house Gamma Phi Beta-Zeta hall dessert Chi Omega faculty dinner Pan hellenic meeting W.A.A. cabinet meeting Thursday, March 7 Friday, March 8 Kappa Kappa Gamma faculty din ner Y.W.C.A.-Y.M.C.A. open house Saturday, March 9 Delta Zeta radio dance Interdorm formal Alpha Omicron Pi house dance Sunday, March 10 Town and Gown Monday, March 11 CLOSED PERIOD BEGINS Exams March 18-22 ATTEND THE CHURCH OF YOUR CHOICE CENTRAL PRESBYTERIAN CIJURCH 10th Ave. at Pearl Rev.
