S1S1 Portland, Oregon | ——— ' Twas the Night Before... I9U5 (With apologies to Clement Clarke Moore) 'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a rent control warden; The stockings were hung by the thermostat with care, But this year they aren’t silk because rayons are more popular. The children were nestled all snug in their bunks, While visions of tommy-guns danced in their clunks. And mom in her curlers, and pop with his snuff, Had just settled down to figure how to pay the Christmas bills. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, And pop. jumped out of his chair to see what was the matter. Up to the window he flew—(flap, flap). “Help! Murder! Police! Here comes a Jap!” The moon soon revealed that the person below Was none other than St, Nick, who hollered “Yo-ho!” And whistled, and beckoned and called his reindeer, “We’ve got more socks than ever waiting this year! Now, Buick! Now Chrysler! Now Packard and Dodge! On Chewy, DeSoto! On Willys and Ford!” And then, in a twinkling, pop heard overhead The prancing and pawing of each worn tread. As he drew in his head, and was turning around when Through the radiator came Nick with a bound. . 1 Ho was dressed all in nylon (and, boy, was it cold!) And he was pressed to, the last Jittle fold. He filled up the socks as quick as a flash, And was just going to leave when he heard a loud crash. Pop opened the door, cried, “Who’s there on the lawn?” “The cosmic patrol, and you’ve left your atoms on. Now see here, my good man, you've got to stop them—■ If these atoms are all on, the enemy won’t miss.” Pop was just turning purple, about to deny it, When St. Nick intervened, saying, “I am the culprit. My reindeer all have electrons attached to their tails To light my way, ’cause the moon often fails. The patrol looked sorry, and said, “This is sad, What you’ve done, old man, looks very bad. According to law, you’re due for a fine, But what about those kids of mine ? They’ve been good for three weeks, just ’cause of you. If their socks aren’t filled, what’ll I do ? This time we’ll forget it, just between us men, If you’ll see that it doesn’t happen again.” So Santa rode off behind all his reindeer, Crying, “Merry Christmas to all, and a happy New Year.” Liz Gilmore. 1 i ..
