By BILL WALKENSHAW Today the Ducks meet the Oregon State Beavers m their second battle for this year. The O, S. C. gang plucked the ihighlv rated Ducks eleven 19-6 in their first clash this season, .in Corvallis, hut we wonder how they will do on the muddy | Hayward field this afternoon. We Hope Not Most of the experts pick the Staters over the home team todav in reference to the 19-6 upset they tacked on the Web footers "that other day.” The Orange of O. S. C. has come a long way since that contest, taking Washington and running all over’helpless Idaho. Their line play has improved vastly and is now one of the strongest forward walls on the coast. They have in Boh Lorenz one of the finest ends seen in action this year. Coupled with llal Buddy, and Boh Krell these three are enough to holster any line into stardom. Although the l m versity of Southern California clipped Oregon State 34-7 last weekend the Beavers are going to he hard to stop with the running of C.arth Rouse, Boh Stevens, Dick Dray mid John R aramanos. Ducks Rested The Oliver coached eleven has had a rest since the California game two weeks ago and believe they needed it. After playing a straight schedule of eight games the Wehfoots were a pretty weare hunch oi footballers. _ What with these two weeks to iron out wrinkles, the Oregon eleven should throw a lot of surprises at the Orange and Tattle Talc-Oray. We hope Coach (I'm changing my system) Oliver has some amphibian otlense worked, because the Ducks aren’t walking these days. Tex certainly shot this writer's “Oregon isn’t a second half hall club lull of holes m the Cal game when his gang came storming hack to roll up 20 points in the last half. If this had been put into effect earlier in the season. Oregon might he fighting for top honors today instead of fighting to keep out of the cellar. 'Phis game toda\ will he the one the old grads have been waiting for all year. If the Ducks can swim their way over the Beavers it might halfwav cancel out the rather mediocre record „f past games. To most of the alums the Oregon State contest I is the one to win. Lose to everyone else, hut don t lose to the I (Beavers. Coach Oliver, please note. Homecoming is all the shot in the arm most am underdog eleven needs to come through so come on Ducks the time is here. Let s dam the Bea\ers! Side Line Stuff Here's some sideline slants from up and down -the coast.] ■('.he last of the Bav Area universities came back into the foot-1 l.all picture for nckt season when the University of Santa Clara signed Laurence A. (Moon) Mullihs to coach the ^ Broncho squad next fall. j Mullins will arrive at Santa Clara next, month and has been given a free hand in selecting aides. It is expected that he will j offer the post, of assistant coach to Lin Casanova, this is not a ,pun. who was assistant to Buck Shaw at Santa Clara in pre war days. Mullins was a teammate of Marehie Schwartz. Stanford head football coach, and this should make the lndian-Broncho rivalry ihotter than ever when the two teams clash on the gridiron once again. Another coincidence is that all Lay Area coaches1 are ,Notre Dame graduates, l’.esides Schwartz and Mullins there are Jimtin l’helan of St. Mary’s, Puck Shaw of California, and Clipper Smith of the University of San Francisco. There should rcallv be some rivalry in the Lay Area next year. More Stuff C,citing back to sidclineihg slants the statisticians have added, subtracted, divided, and jumbled up figures in general to come up with the fact that Blanchard and Davis of Army (as if you didn’t know) have rolled up more scores between them than the entire Xavv back field. This ought to be ol some use to the •wise belters for the coming Army-Navy tilt. Take heed! Talk about vour crowds! Take the 20.000 you will see today and multiple them bv five and you can imagine the 100.000 crowd expected in the T.os Angeles Coliseum to witness the USC-UCLA contest. Coach Jimmv Phelan is on his way to New Orleans where Itis St. Man’s Calloping Cads meet Oklahoma A and M in the Sugar Bowl New Year's Day. Phelan will try to pick up some odds and ends about the Cowpokes and their great back Bob J enimorc, now nation's leading ground gainer.. That's about it for now fellas, think I’ll say “30" for this term and let "Bull" take it from here. Don’t think it hasn't been nice, cause it hasn't. Leicht Selected All-Western OFFICIAL U. P. It would be nice to finish quesstimating with the last of these predictions perfect, but with the mix-up the coast con feience teams have provided, you might say, “its but a dream.” Nothing ventured, nothing gained here goes! (What Again?) Oregon vs. Oregon State The Oregon team has had a two week layoff, while the Beavers from Oregon State were busy loosing 34-7. If I'.S.C. can do it, so can Oregon. Oregon by 6. Army vs. Navy The one and number two teams will battle it out for the one and two spct in the nation. Everyone but the midshipmen pick Army to win, I'm no midshipman, Army by three touchdowns. l.C.L.A. vs. I'.S.C. There's quite a little at stake here, yes, quite a little; the Rose Bowl team will be decided before 100.000 people in the Coliseum. The Bruins would like to “bag the Nag.” while the Trojans would like to win. It looks like U.S.C.’all the way, stopping off in Pasadena to play Alabama. U.S.C. by 13. Alabama vs Mississippi State The only thing Alabama can lose is the game, already being picked for the Rose Bowl. I give Alabama the edge by seven points. St. Mary’s P.F. vs. California California has had it tough all season, the boys from the Pre Flight* are star studded—Pre Flight by 14 points. Notre Dame vs. Great Lakes The fighting Irish are big fav orites in this tussle, but every week some big team is up-set. I say the Irish will go down fight ing the strong tide, produced by the navy men from the Lakes pool of power. Great Lakes by 6. Now for a few hurried predic tions. McDonald "NORTHWEST MOUNTED POLICE" | "SING YOU SINNERS" | Light Backs U P’s Choice _ This Season Jake Leicht, Oregon’s star and quarterback, was placed on the first string, United Press all-star western football team. Oregon s Leicht was named along with other backfield aces of the West; Herman Wedemeyer, Charles “Spike” Corderio, both of St. Mary’s, and Bill Lippincott, Wash ington State. These four were the U. P.’s choice of backfield. The line is made up of Jim Cal lahan, U.S.C., and Ed Ryan, St. Mary’s at ends; Bob “Buster” Mc Clure, Nevada, and Rod Giske, W.S.C. tackles; A1 Sparlis, U.C.L.A. and Alf Hemstead, guards, Washington center. Power and Speed Power, speed, plus weight and some experience, this team could hold its own against any all-siai>» sectional team in the country. St. Marys dominated the first team with three men, another on the second and one given honor able mention. St. Mary’s has an enrollment of 160. Herman Wede meyer is the only player that has a chance for All-American al though Jake Leicht and A1 Spar les, the great U.C.L.A. guard, stand some chance of All-Amer ican and also Buster McClure of Nevada. Leicht Sparks Leicht was the sparkplug of the Oregon team this year. Jake picked up his experience while in the service, playing for the fourth air force and Randolph-Field. Wedemeyer is rated one of the finest triple-threaters ever to play on the coast. Kick, run, block and pass, along with tackle with th?" best and a mental genius on the turf. Coderio Ex-Duck Corderio, ex-Oregon student, is not an all-round player, but one of the trickiest runners in the West. As a “seat back,” he can’t be equaled. Callahan is another of the famous Callahans to attend U.S.C. and receive honors in foot ball. Jim Ryan, the other wing back, has been a St. Mary’s stand out all season. McClure of Nevada rates with any tackle in football today. Giske of W.S.C. is outstanding for his sensational blocking. Sparles of U.C.L.A. is the coast’s best guard, along with Abb Hemstead of Washington, who gets praise from every coach who sees him play.
