They were humble people . . . those men and women who
carved America out of forest and field. They knew a Power
greater than human strength; they trusted in a Wisdom above the
human mind.
But they were proud people as well . . . proud of the land to
which God had brought them ... of the harvest God had so richly
provided ... of the future that God's protection assured.
In the wooded temples of a virgin land they knelt. And from
humble lips and proud hearts rose America's first Thanksgiving.
Three centuries have brought to this land a glory far beyond
the prayers and dreams of the Pilgrims. But the greatness of our
nation will always rest upon the character of her people . . . our
humble trust in God . . . our holy pride in His blessings.
Once again, in the churches which our fathers fashioned out
of the trees and rocks of this free land, Americans give thanks to
God. Let your voice ring out in your chosen church ... in hymn
and prayer to the "Author of Liberty''—of Victory_of Peace
