Church Plans
New Service
An unusual observance of the
communion will take place at the
Unitarian church, 11th and Ferry
streets on Sunday. In the absence
of an ordained minister the regu
lar communion service will not be
performed. Instead each regular
member of the congregation is
asked to bring some cherished
possession. These will be used to
set a table which will thus sym
bolize the participation of the
members of the congregation in
the life of the church.
The morning talk will be given
by Prof. Alfred F. Whiting of the
department of anthropology at the
University. His subject is “We
happen to be Christian.” This is
the third of a series of four talks
by Whiting. Miss Alice English,
University music student will sing.
Letter Deluge
Praises Office
An organized campaign, legiti
mate or otherwise, seems to have
descended this week on Annamae
Winship, Emerald business man
ager.
For some time the business
office has been receiving letters
of complaint from Emerald sub
scribers stating that their papers
are not being received on time.
Yesterday four mysterious let
ters arrived simultaneously. Each
commended Annamae on the fast
mailing service from her office.
The writer of one letter declared
that a club, D.F.O.A.M.W.F.M.S.,
(Devoted Followers of Annamae
Winship’s Fast Mailing Service),
has been organized. Another letter
informed her that she had been
elected the girl Oregon alumni
stationed at Blabla Jima would
most like to be mailed home to.
Doubting the sincerity of the
letters, Miss Winship declared that
everything possible is being done
to speed up the Emerald mailing
service.

Swedish Tenor
(Continued, from page five)
Bjoerling admits that success
has its price. He is separated from
his family nine months out of
each year and Bjoerling loves his
home. He is married to one of
Sweden’s most beautiful women,
the former Anna Lisa Berg,
crowned Queen of the Santa Lucia
1934 Festival, an honor conferred
each year on “the fairest maid in
all Stockholm.”
Bjoerling is a lover of sports.
Among his favorites are swim
ming, sailing, Armbrytning (a
form of wrestling), and one of his
favorite indoor diversions is bil
liards. However, billiards means
finding one t>f those rare spots, a
billiard hall that isn’t smoke-laden.
Three months at his lovely home
pass quickly, and it’s back to work
for Bjoerling, “the foremost lyric
tenor of his day.”

NEW TELEPHONES
Full speed ahead on
our biggest peacetime job
ODAY, conveyors like this at
A Western Electric are carrying
thousands of new telephones for the
Bell System.
But it takes far more than just tele
phones to provide service. It takes
cable, central office equipment and
many other complex items that cannot
be produced and fitted into the tele
phone system overnight. On these
things, too, production is steadily
increasing.
Western Electric, supply unit of the
Bell System, is hard at work on the
biggest peacetime job in its history.
Furnishing materials and equipment
to meet the System’s immediate-needs
— and to carry out the System’s
12,000,000,000 post-war program —
promises record peacetime volume and
a high level of employment.
