Van Johnson Here? Looks Like Him Anyway By Maryann Thielen Coeds who may think the}- have seen Van Johnson on the cam pus of late will be interested to know that it was actually John Calbom, army air corps veteran, who seems quite oblivious of the resemblance. John, who hails from Longview, Washington, •went into service in February, 1943. He left for overseas in Octo uei, as a uumuaruiei-naviga tor in the 379 bombardier squadron, 310th bomb group, 12th air force. His outfit was sent first to the island of Corsica. From that base Calbom’s squadron did frontline bombing in Italy. Asked as to what the men did during their free time, John re plied, “We managed to get'in some good hunting and fishing during our off hours.” Then To Italy Fro'm Corsica the squadron’s base was moved to Fano, Italy, where their targets were mainly in the Brenner Pass, northern Italy, and southern Austria. John bomb ed with the aid of radar on these missions, because they were day ^^ight raids with the target over cast. “I don't think radar is an improvement over the Nordon bombsight, but it enabled us to bomb without seeing the ground,” remarked the 20-year-old blond. After 28 missions, John was sent to a 'rest camp on the Riviera in Cannes, France. He stayed in the Martinez hotel and “had a swell tinje” using the recreational fa cilities provided for the men. “It took all of us about three days to recover from a week at the rest camp,” grinned John. While there he was fortunate enough to pur chase a bottle of Chanel No. 5, but he wouldn’t say to whom it was given. Profitable Stop Calbom returned to the states via the southern route and, during a two-day stop in Brazil, he pur chased some hard-to-get silk stockings to bring home. Obvious ly, John has a keen understanding of what girls like. Asked for a comparison of the French and Italian women, John commented that the French girls were more like the American girls than were the Italian women. While on the campus, John is majoring in business administra tion and living at Sigma hall. The Chief, making an inspection round, rummaged through a sea bag and came up with a bottle of Seagram’s Seven. “Don’t you know this seabag is only for clothing?” demanded the Chief. “Yes, sir,” replied the sailor, “that’s my nightcap.” r Record Room Open In Libe The Carnegie Record room in the University library is now open to the entire student body. With the exception of a few records which are reserved for music stu dents, a complete classical reper toire can be heard. The room will be open with an attendant on duty Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.; on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.; and on Friday music lovers can visit from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A request was made by one of the professors that no one play Beethoven’s Fifth symphony. The records are worn out, probably because of the selection’s popu larity. Hits and Misses (Continued from (age two) Russian paratrooper, a Parisian girl, and eight German soldiers are trapped in the basement of a shell factory. Besides having to control the German?, the Russian must get information from one of them. The situation is so realistically presented that most of the aud ience sits up uncomfortably straight through the whole pic ture. Paul Muni gives an excellent performance. Love, for once, is left completely out of a war pic ture. MEET MISS BOBBY SOCKS is no doubt a Hollywood script writer's idea of how the younger generation lives. Bob Crosby sup plies the only bearable moments. REX PRACTICALLY YOURS is really funny. It's about a flyer who makes a suicide dive on a Jap flattop and comes back. He finds himself a hero with a fiancee whom he doesn’t remember. For the next two weeks America’s favorite couple tries to keep the public in the dark. The result is a witty and fast-moving comedy. BRAZIL must have been made to embarrass travel bureaus and infuriate Brazilians. I hope the producer is ashamed of himself. New Kwqma Tapped At Thursday Dinner Descending on the Theta house en masse, Kwama, sophomore wo men’s honorary, tapped Margaret “Mickey” Metcalf to fill the va cancy left by Martha Leah Lance who did not return to school this year. Mickey was presented with the traditional red carnation and red, white, and black pledge ribbon at dinner Thursday evening. Ho Hum (Continued from page tzt'o) time and let us know if Bob Moran can get by with such stuff. We’re really interested and amused, no foolin’. Wish we could keep up with Jacky Ruble, local candy man, who keeps running from the Theta to the Kappa house and vice-versa constantly. Could it be he still has affections for Carolyn jTylor of Theta and can’t quite make up his mind about Phyt Brugman of the house across the street? Lucky us. Word has reached the campus that this week we will all get a chance to cast our eyes on that hunk of man who left school to play pro ball. Bill Maytlier. Bet Nancy Knight is planning a big week-end, eh? Could it be true Dorothy “I’ve a right to change my mind” Carl son isn’t enthused about Mr. Dick Bunting anymore? Too bad, Dick, but the ratio is still in your favor. Congratulations to Hendricks hall's Carolyn Jo Parker who is doing quite well setting her own endurance record at Taylor’s and proving there are men to be had if one only knows where to look. Polly “Remember?” Chafe is on a hunting trip in Palm Springs. Little does she realize her man Johnny Itroder is finding hunting quite good right here on the cam pus. Tsk, tsk, will this mean a noise parade when Polly comes marching home? Lost: One brunette by the name of Elinore, five-foot-five and very pretty. She is wanted by William F.
