D. Samuels Joins Staff Straight from federal intelli gence work, Daniel G. Samuels, visiting associate profressor in the ■•'department of languages, arrived on the campus this fall. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Samuels did his graduate work at Columbia university, where he received his master’s and doctor's degrees. Although most of his classes are in Spanish, the profes sor is able to speak French, Span ish, Portugese, and German. The first three are his favorites. The doctor revealed that he has taught English to Spaniard's and is assur ing that they have equally as many problems in conquering a foreign language as do the Amer icans. Travelled Much Dr. Samuels has traversed many foreign lands including France, Spain, and Porto Rico, but this is his first visit to Oregon. He is overwhelmed at the hospitality _ghown and the welcome help offered by Oregonians. In his statement the professor exclaimed, “I have found Oregon students eager, intelligent, and most courteous. Being a football fan, I shall be watching for their team’s victory over Washington this weekend.’ A Hollywood star was somewhat sensitive when she applied for her license for her fifth marriage. The clerk who made out her marriage license began to ask the routine questions: “Have you been married before, and if so, to whom?’’ The air became zero, and in her most freezing manner she de manded, “What is this, a memory test?’’ A- - -- Twenty Years Ago On the Campus j In 1925, the Big; Sister Move ment was forwarded for the first time at Oregon. The first day cf registration showed the largest enrollment of new students in the history of the University. A total of 1077 registered. An editorial column in fall term, 1925, commented: The big prob lem in clothes this year is “what shall milady omit to wear?” It locks as if the style designers started with nothing for an idea and pulled with the same thing. # * * The theater program proudly announced: THE REX—Hoot Gibson in “The Saddle Hawks,” a galloping' tale of lariats and love amid the splendors of Ore gon's own range. * * ❖ And the Mac hailed big specials all coming soon—Charles Chaplin in “The Gold Rush,” John Barry more in “The Sea Beast,” and : Mary Pickford in “Little Annie Rooney.” Their slogan—“A movie a day, keeps the blues away.” * * * | Ray P.
