Rise Stevens Praised For Sensitive Expression By PHYL PERKINS The last in a series of concerts sponsored at McArthur court by tlfe Eugene Civic Music association came to a close Satur day evening when Rise Stevens, Metropolitan mezzo soprano, sang as her second encore Dvorak’s “Songs My Mother Taught Me.’ Assisted by Paul TJlanowsky at the piano, Miss Stevens presented an extremely varied pro gram compiled of selections rang ing from Gretchaninoff’s mourn ful Russian melody to the gayest of Wagenaar songs written on children. Throughout the program, Miss Stevens deftly swayed her audi ence, establishing with each song a distinct sensitivity in mood. The excellence of Miss Steven’s French diction was apparent as she became the daring, flirtatious Carmen in “Habanera.” No less ef fective was her fluency in German. Highlighting the program was the dramatic aria from “Samson et Dalila” by Saint Saens, in which Miss Stevens portrayed the false ness of Delila and her struggle to discover the secret of Samson's miraculous strength. Her voice carried easily to the farthest cor ners of the balcony even as she sang the most delicate of lullabys, now released its full powers. Only on the prolonged phrases of Han del’s “Where’er You Walk” was her control more apparent. Hardly had Miss Stevens begun the light and laughing “Look, Ed win” from “The Very Little Sphinx” when it was over, and as the audience responded so enthus iastically, she laughed, “Would you like me to do it again?” Her per sonality will be impossible to forget. Outstanding in an audience’s memory of Rose Stevens will be the unusual quality of her low notes and her sincere expression of feeling. However, few will fail to recall her as an individual, as a fascinating personality. Many will always see her as she crossed the stage, a beautiful woman, striking ly attired in jeweled white. Miss Stevens’ first encore was “Seguidellia” from Bizet's Carmen, and a closing encore was “A Little China Figure” by Franco Leoni. Her pianist, Paul Ulanowsky, was well received, and played Brahms “Rhapsody in G Minor” as an en core. Senior Women Shine (Continued from page nine) audiences in several Eugene ap pearances.
