Tri-Delts Offer Scholarships Junior and senior women inter ested in Delta Delta Delta scholar ships should contact the dean of •women's office immediately as ap plications must be submitted be fore June 1. Applicants may or may not be members of Delta Delta Delta, but should be a junior or senior woman of fine character working coward a degree, useful in tlie war effort, and a valuable citizen in the post war reconstruction period. They must be in need of financial assist ance because of economic disloca tions resulting from the war. These scholarships are awarded each year on campuses where Delta Delta Delta houses are located. The amount to be awarded on the Ore gon campus is $200 and as yet no aj : Lit : ms have been made. Academic Change Caused by Illness Arrangements made for ex change, during the next academic year, of Dr. Celestine J. Sullivan, assistant professor of philosophy at. the University, and Dr. Louis O. Kattsoff. associate professor of philosophy at the University of 'North Carolina, has been cancelled. In announcing the change in plans for the professors from the two institutions. Acting President O lan lo ; i illi 3 stated that ill ness in the immediate family of Dr. Kattsoff necessitated the can cellation. Campbell in Service Lawrence E. Campbell, freshman in liberal arts and social chairman of Yeomen, left Monday night for Uort Lewis and induction into the army air corps. Campbell was a tuck letterman and half-miler at Washington high school in Port land, and was a cadet in the CAP. Broadwav Mortar Board Installs Heads Outgoing and new members of Mortar Board, senior women’s hon orary, met jointly last night at the apartment of Mrs. Alice Macduff. Officers of next year’s Mortar Board, installed Sunday, are Janet Douglas, president; Bernice Gran quist, vice president; Mary Corri gan, secretary; Signe Eklund, trea surer; Louise Montag, reporter; and Phyllis Evans, historian. The installation and initiation was held at the home of Chancellor and Mrs. Frederick M. Hunter. William Higgins Enlists !n Navy Radar Training William Higgins, 17, freshman in liberal arts, has enlisted in the navy as a seaman first class, radar technician, and upon completion of the academic year he will be sent to the radar training school at Chicago. Upon successful completion of his primary school, he will be given advanced training in radar ma teriel. Should he successfully com plete this course, he will have an education equal to a two-year en gineering course in any major uni versity, according to Chief W. E. Bell of the Eugene navy recruiting station. Atfer 10 months of train ing he will be assigned to active duty ashore, afloat, or in the air, as a petty officer. If he continues training he will graduate as a petty officer first class. ODE Staff Plans Dinner (Continued from Page one) present certificates of achievement for one year of Emerald work, and the coveted Emerald “O” pins for two years of staff activity. Miss Winship will distribute the same awards to those on the financial side of the paper. Introducing next year’s staff will be Louise Montag', incoming' editor, and Miss Winship, [who was reappointed business man ager. To Award Plaque George Turnbull, acting dean of the school of journalism and ad viser to the Emerald, will present the Turnbull-Hall plaque for the outstanding senior woman in journ alism, the Emerald editor excluded. Absent from the traditional af fair will be King Shubert Fendrick, who was crowned at a Shackrat party early this term. Fendrick is in navy training now at San Diego. Guests will include Horace Robin son, acting educational activities director, and members of the journ alism faculty. AMERICAN HEROES BY LEFF 1 " mmmmm—»—m Scouting on foot in Tunisia, Pfc. Charles II. Evans was captured hy 30 Italian infantrymen and marched to the rear. A bayonet at his back, Evans whirled, disarmed his guard, and escaped. Although wounded by rifle fire, h“ hid in a cactus patch till nightfall, slipped back to our forces with valuable information picked up as a prisoner. For this he wears the Purple Heart and the Silver Star. Celebrate Evans’ escape with another War Bond. WAA Initiation Set For 7; Meeting at 8 WAA initiation for all women who have received spring term ac tivity participation points will be held tonight at 7 p.m. in Alumni hall of Gerlinger. All members of the women's athletic association are invited to attend the term meeting scheduled for 8 p.m. in the same room, at which awards will be presented, refreshments will be served, and entertainment will be provided. Virginia Scholl heads the meet ing as general chairman; Wanda Lu Payne and Della Jones have charge of the refreshments, and Beverly Bennett will provide the entertainment. Organ Recital Helen Luvaas, senior in music, will be heard in an organ recital, May 29, at 8 p.m. in the school of music auditorium. She will play a group of eight numbers by Gabrieli, Bach, Brahms, Mendelssohn, and several others. The University symphony or chestra will be heard in its spring concert, Sunday, May 27, at 4 p.m. in the school of music auditorium. They will play four works by Weber, Beethoven and Smetana.
