UO Expresses
Regret Over
Loss of FDR
The following tributes to Presi
dent Franklin D. Roosevelt were
given Thursday by representative
members of the University faculty,
administration, and student body:
W. F. G. Thacher, professor of
English and advertising: With the
shock and the almost overwhelm
ing sense of loss and bereavement,
I am conscious also of a deep re
gret that we, the American people,
could not have found a way of pay
ing Franklin Delano Roosevelt the
homage he so richly deserved. Even
those who were politically opposed
to him must know in their hearts
that Mr. Roosevelt was a great
president, a great humanitarian, a
great human being. Now it is too
late to give him the tribute that
history will surely pay.
Acting President Orlando John
Hollis: The loss of our president
in time of war is a great blow. He
did not have the satisfaction of
leading the country finally to peace
but he did know that victory was
certain. We must all unite under
the new commander-in-chief and
fight on in the cause for which
so many have now given their
lives.
Chancellor Frederick M. Hunter:
The death of President Roosevelt
is a calamity. As the United Na
tions are about to achieve a great
victory, and as the world confer
ence of San Francisco seems to be
preparing to establish an organ
ization to insure world peace, the
death of one of the principal pro
ponents of the plan certainly is
very much to be deplored.
Dr. Quirinus Breen, associate
professor of social science: Mr.
Roosevelt happens to be the only
president for whom I stumped, in
the state of Michigan in the 1932
election. 1 was present at the con
ference that nominated him. I feel
that we have had the privilege of
living under one of the three or
four greatest Americans in our
history.

LAST WEEK we got the following frantic note:
“Sirs:

are drawing nooses around my
neck . . . tighter, tighter, tighter!
I’m at my wit’s end! What can
I do?

Dear J. M.:
Your symptoms are unmistakably those of a mail suffering
from subcicula strangulalio, or what we call quite untech
nically “shrunk collar.”
We prescribe a switch to Arrow shirts—they’re Sanforized
labeled (fabric shrinkage less than 1%). They’ll not only
relieve the pressure on your gullet, but also holster your
spirit immeasurably with their good looks. $2.24 up.
Complete the prescription with some swell-looking Arrow
ties, and you’ll he a new man! $1 and $1.50.
