By BOB CHAPMAN After a verv successful and profitable basketball season Ore gon revert^ back to the regrettable status as a nonparticipant in the Coast conference along- with Oregon State, Stanford, and Montana during- the spring baseball and track season. .Washington State and Idaho intend to field baseball and track squads despite the shortage of experienced material and man power, irregardlcss of the decision of the Oregon schools. Softball Ahead Hayward and Howe fields will not be the scene of conference competition but an intramural softball league has been organ ized and competition should be keen, especially since varsity prospects have no other alternative than to play intramural ball this season. Intramural track hasn't been scheduled as yet, but Col. Bill Hayward will undoubtedly form a track squad from the PE track and field classes. Class competition and practice meets with local high school, thinclads may be all that is in store for future cindernten this spring. Only by a progressive spring sports program can Oregon hope to return to conference competition with a partially ex p ricnced baseball and track squad next year if the board of athletics should approve the return of Webfoot football, base ball. and track to conference competition. W ashington will un doubted!) have the edge on all of the other schools of the Northern Division conference because the Huskies have con tinued to field football, basketball, baseball and track teams. In the past navy trainees have-dominated the starting lineups but with the decrease in na\y enrollment civilian students are breaking into the starting positions and gaining valuable experi ence against army and navy teams while Oregon stands idle because of a so-called manpower shortage. Unless Oregon acts soon it will be at a distinct: handicap which will take several seasons to overcome.
