Among recent visitors on the campus were five Phi^Delts:
Lt. Don Kirsch, Capt. Dan Mahoney, Major George Mackin,
and Lt. Bill Scharf, all from Oregon, and Lt. Jim Kirsch, Yale.
The men were guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward j
Bailey, 1136 East 19th street, Eugene.
Lt. Kirsch of the infantry was wounded in action and is j
stationed at the Barnes hospital
in Vancouver, Washington, at pres
ent. He is reported to he progress
ing nicely and hopes soon to be
completely recovered. While on the
campus, Lt, Kirsch was captain of
the basketball team, a member of
Friars, and played baseball, as well
as many other activities. He ex
pects to be transferred to the Mc
Caw General hospital in Walla
Walla soon,
Capt. Mahoney of the army air
corps, has been stationed in the
Southwest Pacific until recently
transferred to San Francisco. He
has been awarded several decora
tions which he is too modest to
reveal.
Mackin Three Years Overseas
Major Mackin of the 8th air
force, 303rd bombardment group,
has been ill England for nearly
three years chalking up over 800
flying hours. The B-17 flyer had I
his quota of missions completed
long ago, but turned down his
chances to come home. He was
commander of his squadron and
had 600 men under his command.
His group has been commended
highly by Gen. Doolittle several
times.
When Major Mackin left Eng
land, his squadron presented him
with a plaque, of which only four
have ever been given. Another of
these was presented to Col. Hermit
Stevens, also a Phi Delt, formerly
of Oregon. The graduate of ’41 is
now going to Santa Anna, Cali
fornia, and from there will be sta
tioned somewhere in this country.
Lt. Scharf of the infantry is sta
tioned at present at the McCaw
Genera] hospital after being
wounded overseas. Lt. Scharf was
very active in campus affairs be
fore entering the service.
Cellars Wounded
Lt. Allen V. Cellars, DU, has
been wounded in action according
to word received by his parents.
Lt. Cellars had been stationed in
Belgium.
Robert Brooks, Soundman 3/e,
is now stationed on the destroyer
escort, Thaddeus Parker, in the
South Pacific. Brooks previously
had taken training at Farragut,
then at the west coast sound school
in San Diego. He has been in the
navy for 13 months.
