IriJo-tild 9h Review This term saw the world’s attention shift from war to thoughts of peace. Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin, meeting -feke middle of February at Yalta in the Crimea, made decisions which included plans for the joint occupation, with French as sistance, of Germany; settlement of the Polish boundaries; vot ing procedure in the world organization; and the calling of a United Nations conference in San Francisco on April 25 to set up the world organization. In the United States, congress has been fighting' over the “work or-else” bill and the confirmation of Henry Wallace as secretary of commerce replacing Jesse Jones. The senate received Wallace’s nomination on January 22nd and delayed action on it until the George Bill which takes the PvFC and other lending agencies from the control of the commerce de partment, was approved February 16. Confirmation of Wallace’s appointment then followed on March 1st. February 1st the house passed the “work-or-else” bill and sent it to the senate where it was shut tled in and out of committees un dergoing a number of changes. The compromise bill has been sent to the floor of the senate but no ac tion has been taken on it as yet. Other important events which took place during this term’s pe riod were: The German gains in the area of the Belgian Bulge were wiped out and Allied forces again took the offensive on the western front. Recognition of the Polish Ru bin government by the Soviet Un ion came January 5th while the London government was still rec ognized by the United States and ! Great Britain. American amphibious forces j landed in the Lingayen gulf area I of Luzon at 9:30 a.m. January 9th, two years and nine months after Bataan fell. The truce ending the 40-day-old Greek civil war was signed Jan uary 11th between Greek ELAS leaders and the British army. The capture of Wanting' Janu ary 3rd opened the way for travel over the Ledo-Burma road, new Chinese life-line. Warsaw, first European capital to fall to the Nazis, was liberated January ITth by Soviet troops. On February 5th Gen. Douglas MacArthur entered Manila with his troops, carrying' out his “I will return" pledge. Climaxing a tremendous drive covering more than 100 miles in two weeks, Soviet forces reached the Oder river within 30 miles of Berlin. Budapest fell to Red army troops after 49 days of savagfe street fighting. The air-base island of Iwo Jima was stormed February 20th by U. S. marines initiating- the bloodiest and most costly battle of the Pa cific war. The Inter-American conference on war and postwar problems of the hemisphere opened February 21st in Mexico City. Basic plans were laid calling for concerted ac tion by all countries in North and South America in the event of a threat to any one of them. The western front blazed into action with an artillery barrage February 23rd preluding the drive which carried American troops across the Roer and Erft rivers t\ the outskirts of Cologne and other industrial cities.
