I went to one of the New Year’s dances held in town, but it wasn’t ‘pretty good.’ ” When asked how the social func tions and customs here correspond to Colombian consuetudes he re plied, “Well, again they are much the same, even our manner of dress is similar. A few customs are dif ferent, such as with dating when you are required to have chap erones. But many Americans have an erroneous opinion about this, for when we, what you call double date, chaperons are not necessary. Colombians Always Late “Also it is always a practice to arrive late at all parties; no one with good manners arrives on time. We have two or three official dances a year given by the repub lic, besides the private affairs. “As for the girls, well, I don’t know how to qualify them. Enjoys Slang I had the most trouble with the word scissors, for we would pro nounce it sceesors, and when I tried to buy one in a drugstore, they offered be everything from salt to seeds. I like your slang be cause it is so expressive, and an other thing I enjoy is your lack of gossip.” Future plans are rather indefi nite for Horace, because of the war, <• but he does have many ideas, “Per haps I will stay here for another year and then return to South Am erica to do some sort of city plan ning.
