Former Student
Now in Holland
David F. Knox, former UO stu
dent, has covered a lot of territory
since graduating from the Univer
sity, according to a letter received
by Dean Onthank.
Rc reported that the natives of
both France and Belgium were
"exceedingly happy” to see Am
erican soldiers. "It was not un
usual for the women to rush out
and kiss us on both cheeks,” he
wrote.
On his trip across the ocean he
saw Wayne Harbert, another Ore
gon student. Kncx is now in Hol
land.
Mrs. Phyllis Gray Knox, his
wife, formerly accompanist for the
Eugene Gleemen, is now studying
music at Boston. She presented a
concert at the University last
spring.
Chemistry Instructors
To Attend ACS Meeting
Faculty members of the chem
istry department will attend a
meeting of the Oregon section of
the American Chemistry society
in Portland, Thursday, October 19.
They will be addressed by Dr. Earl
A. Evans, Jr., on the subject of
"Carbon Dioxide Fixation in Ani
mal Tissues.”
Dr. Evans, who is professor and
chairman of the department of bio
chemistry at the University of
Chicago, began his study of carbo
hydrate metabolism while working
in England .in the laboratory of
Dr. Hans Krebs. Since then he has
worked on various aspects of car
bohydrate metabolism, particularly
on carbon dioxide fixation by ani
mal tissues, the effect of insulin,
and the mechanism of carbohy
drate oxidation.

At University Libe
Those extra pictures to bright
en up a college room have been
made available to students re
cently by the University library.
There are several hundred of
them on hand including old mas
terpieces, modern American,
modern English, Mexican, and
religious paintings.
They are part of a collection
started in 1929, some of which
were purchased from art dealers
in France and Italy. Each pic
ture is loaned for a period of
30 days without charge and may
be renewed twice.
