False Cry of 'Fire'
Routs Out Alpha Phis
The Alpha Phis . had Butch
Leckie, house fire chief, to thank
for the drill i Tuesday night when
the bell rang just as they were
changing into their nightgowns,
putting up their hair, diving into
bed, swishing a toothbrush over
their molars, etc.
But when the bell went off at
5 o’clock the next morning, Butch
was just as amazed as the rest of
the Phis. A real fire! Like flashes
of lightning, bundles of speed, and
potential Glenn Cunninghams they
streaked down the stairs and out
side. The panic was intense! But
where was the fire ? After care
ful, somewhat shame-faced exam
ination, it was found that no
flames existed. False alarm!
The Phis went back to bed.

elected by mail this summer, as
there was no meeting of the entire
association. Instead three regional
meetings, one in Salem, were held
this spring.
Mr. Clark served as secretary of
the western association in 1939 and
1940, and was editor of the associ
ation's quarterly journal, “Western
Speech” from 1940 until 1943.
