is what you make it. Success isn’t
a thing to strive for. Feeling that
you’ve contributed something to
people, being able to play second
fiddle and play it well, is more im
portant in achieving that intang
ible, hard-to-define thing called
happiness.”
Although Gerd isn’t exactly
playing second fiddle to anyone on
this campus right now, she ap
proves of the idea—which is some
thing. And after she graduates she
hopes to continue her education in
some eastern school. Miss Han
sen’s greatest ambition, however,
is to go back to Norway some day,
possibly to engage in post-war re
construction there.—D.Y.
Campus News Bureau
(Continued front page two)
Dorothy Godknecht, for the latter.
Besides cooperating- with news
papers, the bureau occasionally is
called upon to write articles for
national publications, and obtain
special stories or information.
Photos by Teter
Mrs. Sophia Moore, newly-ap
pointed secretary for the bureau, is
assisted by Mrs. Hermiona Smith
Bain, and on a part time basis by
several students. Photography for
the bureau’s use is done by J. War
ten Teter, manager of the photo
bureau, and to some extent by stu
dents in the graphic journalism
class.
Originally University publicity
was handled by one man, usually
a journalism professor. Later the
bureau was established and moved
to its present location.
The late Eric W. Allen, dean of
the school; Alfred Powers, journal
ism professor at the Portland ex
tension center, Collin N. Dyment,
later dean of the college of litera
ture, science, and arts here, and
Ralph D. Casey, now director of
the school of journalism at the
University of Minnesota, are
among those who were in charge
of publicity.
Former Heads in War Work
A recent director of the bureau,
Lyle Nelson, is now in Washington,
D. C., where he is editing war de
partment technical publications
(ordnance). Another alumnus who
was in charge of the bureau is
Cecil Snyder, who is serving in the
navy.
