Theater Tolerant,
Claims Seybolt
Mrs. Ottilie Seybolt, associate
professor of speech and dramatic^
arts, has returned to the campus
from a year’s sabbatical leave at
Columbia University, New York.
There she has been studying lan
guages and English literature, and
observing the drama groups at
Yale, Mount Holyoke, Hunter col
lege, Columbia university, and
especially Broadway itself.
“I feel that the interest in drama
this year is in two places—musical
productions of which Oklahoma is
the most outstanding example still
playing, and negro productions,”
Mrs. Seybolt stated, giving “Car-^
men Jones” and the very recent
“Anna Lucesta” as examples of
the latter.
“The negro is having an oppor
tunity which he never had before
and is making good in it,” con
tinued Mrs. Seybolt as she ex
pressed the belief that the theater
san become a strong factor in
racial tolerance.
Stating that she believes mus
icals to be superior to other types
of dramas this last year, Mrs. Sey
bolt was especially interested in
‘Mexican Hayride” the cast of
.vhich included Dorothy Durkee, a
former graduate in drama of theV,
University of Oregon.
