iiiiiiiiiumuuuituuiumiiiiiuiiiuuuui Campus Cuties Vie With GFs in Mythical Game In one of the worst ball games seen this year the Ei Phelta Thi sorority eked out a one run 18-17 victory over the Army Aih Coah men from Hendricks hall last night on Howe field. The Ei Pheltas, by virtue of dumping the Air Corps, now claim the Willamette Valley servicewomen’s championship formerly held jointly by the ASTU (one moment of silence) the Aih Coah, and Miller’s department store. Tnougn me oaiue was mp anu tuck throughout, the outcome was never in doubt as the Air Corps had considerable trouble lining out to the Thi catcher all afternoon. The battery of “Lefty” Horstman chucking and “King Kong” Holli day catching was untouchable— that is after the first inning, for the “boys without wings” shoved across all seventeen of their runs in the first canto. “Whitey” Sage started on the mound for the Pheltas but had to be replaced in the first inn ing by Horstman because the glare of the sun in Whitey’s hair blinded three Air Corps men, two specta tors, and one usherette borrowed from the State theater. When Rog White blasted a trip le to deep center to open the ball game, it looked like a walkaway for Cap Cable’s birdmen. However, White was later tagged out by “Bucky” Ames when Rog decided to take a stroll over toward second base to talk the whole thing over with “Ripper” Pelly who worked at the keystone spot. White refused i EUGENE HOTEL Presents ART HOLMAN AND HIS ORCHESTRA Every Sat. Nite Dancing 9 ’til 12 in the Persian Room to leave the diamond after being called out until he got a date with the Ripper and finally had to be ousted from the game by "Beans” Schwering, the umpire. The Ei Pheltas pecked away at the Air Corps lead until the last of the ninth when the This started their game winning rally. When Mary Bush stepped up to the platter with two already gone and the score reading 17-16 with the G.I.’s holding the reins, it looked like all was over except the order from Wild Bill Larsen to "fall in and march back to the barracks.” How ever, Bush promptly dropped a dou ble in between Meyers and Kirby who were busy playing honeymoon bridge in center field. With the game riding on her shoulders “Dreamy” Marugg dug in at the plate and smacked a terrific bunt in the general direction of "don’t I look cute with my crew cut” Bern stein. Cy fielded the ball and was about to make the throw to "Stretch” Mintz at first when he spotted one Mike Sawyer sitting in the upper tier along the left field line. By the time 193 Air Corps men could drag Cy out of the upper tier, Bush and Marugg were in with the two tallies which meant victory for the Ei Pheltas. When asked for their opinion of the game, Captain Cable and Lt. Punches sang in unison to the tune of "The G.I. Jive”—"Bernstein for C. Q. next weekend.” Air Corps Nine Beats Civilian Team, 18-8 The air corps pounded out an IS to 8 victory over a picked civilian crew yesterday afternoon at Howe field. The game was a tight battle be tween Bob Davis of the civilian team and Tony Stemkoski of the air corps until the third inning when the air corps men found the range. Davis, former Medford high ace, weakened in this frame, and fre quent walks coupled with timely hitting by the flyers put the civilian men temporarily at a disadvantage as the air corps crossed the plate four times to take a 6 to 1 lead. The civilian men came back in the fourth frame with a seven run blast off Stemkoski’s pitching to overcome the deficit and take the lead. Hard hitting by Gibson, Ham ilton, Robinson, and Davis marked the civilian men’s big inning. Good defensive play by Gillis and Norm Robinson constantly highlighted the game. Coming into the last frame trail ing, 8-6, the air corps men had a big inning as fifteen men faced Da vis and Gibson. Davis was tired by this time and issued four succes sive passes before leaving the mound in favor of Gibson. Wessner, Wahlberg, Stemkoski, and Toomb pounded the ball hard to drive in ten runs for the air corps, making the final tally, 18 to 8.
