UO Campus Dons Military Garb (Continued from page one) McArthur court. Later that week Orlando J. Hollis, acting dean of the law7 school, was appointed acting president. More than 200 Dads were in Eugene for Dad’s day January 22. At their luncheon at the Eugene hotel, Ernest Haycox gave the ad dress, “Dads Belong to the Human Race,” and that afternoon they elected Eugene Vandeneynde of Salem as president. ‘‘Dream Girl” Janet Marugg was official welcomer. Campus war bond sales reached $260,360 in a nationwide drive in January. As a result of a contest among living organizations, five of their representatives were chosen finalists, and Irene Gresham, Delta Delta Delta, received the title of “Bonds Away Girl.” For a program boosting war bond sales, National Pin-Up Girl Ramsay ^'Ames, along with Edgar Kennedy, comedian, and five war heroes, were on the campus. 6 Homecoming, held as a token event rather than a celebration, was observed January 15. A tribute to fighting alumni was paid at the Oregon-Oregon State game, and visiting alumni were invited to the ISA Canteen Mixer at Gerlinger hall after the game. “Public Wolves Number One” was the title won by the men of Company B of the Engineers for the most active participation in the AWS-sponsored! Nickel Hop. Honorable mention went to Camp bell co-op. Open to soldiers and civilians on Saturday night now is an ASUO Canteen in the third floor of Gerlinger hall. Six official coed hostesses, diferent ones each week, assist Mary Beard with the canteen, where both dancing and reading are in order. Being organized is a Total Victory league for discussion of post war problems. Another action on the serious side is the beginning of ASUO forum series held weekly with the Oregon state system of ^sighev education as the discussion topic. Recruiting of graduate assist ants, scholarship standards, the building- of new classrooms and laboratories, and research facil ities are problems to be consider ed. UO’s Museum of Natural History Holds Wonders of South Sea Corals An exhibit of corals accompanied by notes, cards, maps, and drawings which explain the formation of atolls and coral islands is at the museum of natural history on the second floor of Condon hall. In the present war many of the coral islands are used by the Japanese as air bases in the South Pacific. The coral polyps which secrete the corals live in salt water, at the temperature of approxi mately 68 degrees, and can live not more than 100 or 200 feet be low the sea level. Wind, waves, and other factors help to form fringing and barrier reefs next to their parent' islands. The atoll is a special form of reef which, acording to Charles Darwin, was formed by subsidence of an island, generally volcanic, with a fring ing or barrier reef encircling it.
