New Science Group Meets Wednesday The final organizational meeting of the new Oregon Acad emy of Science held Wednesday at Oregon State college was attended by W. D.-Smith, member of the original committee and head of the geology and geography department of the Uni versity, Established to coordinate the work of the Oregon institu tions of natural and physical sciences, the academy will sponsor Air Men Give ’Mid corn stalks and cider, air corps men and their favorite duckettes will take in All Hal lows atmosphere at the air corps Hallowe’en dance and party at 51:00 tonight in Hendricks hall, Cy Bernstein, head of the social committee, said Friday. Music will be furnished by sev en pieces of Owen Bailey’s all soldier band. Ca-Jet Corporals Petf.e Pride and Sheldon Fisher are in charge of the decorations and Private Robert Lutton is the official k.p. pusher. Band members who will play for the dance include Owen Bai ley, leader, trombone; Ralph Sut ton, piano; Roger White, drums; Ace Felburg, clarinet; Bob Stat ion, trumpet; Jack Blumenthaul, tenor saaxophone; and Sue Welch, vocalist. These members are the band within a band the nucleus of the band, Owen Bai ley said. Chaperons will be Captain and Mis. Charles Cable; Lieutenant and Mrs. M. G. Punches; Dr. and Mrs. S. K Rauch; and Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Bubb, Jr. Plans for the dance began when news came that the sopho more formal scheduled' for this Saturday, had been cancelled be cause the army is not allowed to play at profit making functions where soldiers are charged ad mission, and it was too late to contact any other band. The dance will be an informal, short-silk affair. University of Texas graduated 108 petroleum engineering stu dents for the armed services. Membership is open to anyone interested in science and a small yearly fee is charged. Officers Elected Commented Dr. Smith, “If this academy can get substantial fi nancial backing it can do fine work. The idea is excellent; it will help stimulate public interest in science.” The meeting was held in con nection with the 75th anniversary of the founding of Oregon State college. A constitution was adopted and officers were elect ed. Dr. Strand, president of OSC, was elected president of the academy until the first regular meeting to be held in January, at which time Dean McGrath of the University of Portland will take over. Dean Gilfillan of the school of science at OSC is sec retary and R. R. Huestis, Uni versity professor of zoology, is treasurer. Committee Named Members of the original com mittee are: Dr. W. D. Dr. Van Kirk attended the Uni versal Christian conference in Stockholm on life and work in 1925; a Prague World Confer ence of Christians in 1928; and the World Youth Peace confer ence in Holland the same year. In 1935 he made an extensive trip to Russia where he was giv en an opportunity to study relig ious conditions of that country. In 1938 Dr. Van Kirk repre sented various national organiza tions at the Pan-American con ference in Lima. Peru. While there he gave a radio digest of Secretary Hull's closing address before the conference. In 1940 Dr. Van Kirk attended the special conference of Ameri can States in Havana. He has been a frequent visitor to the White House where he consulted with President Roose velt on matters touching upon foreign policy. Michigan State ASTs get out their own newspaper. ssq Now Playing Mabel Paige in "SOMEONE TO REMEMBER" Instructor, Pupil Give Joint Recital By JERKY BERCOVITZ Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor and the Tschaikowsky Pi ano Concerto in B flat minor were highlights of the duo piano recital given by Mrs. Jane Thach er and Everett Fulton on Thurs day night. The program opened with a stimulating duo piano arrange ment of "America” played by Mrs. Thacher and Mr. Fulton. Fulton then played the Tschaikov ski Piano Concerto in B flat Mi nor with the orchestral accom paniment played by Mrs. Thach er. He displayed an excellent technique and a beautiful per ception of tone quality. His ca denzas were clear and he seemed to have a fine command of the keyboard' at all times. Mrs. Thacher then continued the program with the playing of Repper’s "Dance in the Patio,” Granados "Jota” (Spanish Dance), and completed the pro gram with the playing of Grieg’s Concerto in A Minor. Her fluent technique together with her warm expression of tone will remain in the minds of her audience for a long time. Smith, head of the geol ogy and geography department, was recently named to the min eral committee of the Oregon state planning commission. This committee will investigate the mineral situation of the state in reference to the possibilities of exteensive development of _the coal, iron, and other mineral de posits found in Oregon. Chairman of extensive development of the director of the state department of geology and mineral industry. The state planning commission, of which the committee is a part, has been established to further the post-war development of Ore gon. Mr. Fulton is a pupil of Mrs. Thacher. This was Mr. Fulton's last concert for the present as he is being inducted into the United States navy very shortly. House Manager's Job At Igloo Vacant Now r The position of house manager for McArthur court is open to anyone interested in handling it, Horace Robinson, acting educa tional activities director, an nounced recently. Girl Reserves Stage * Puppet Show at YWCA “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” a puppet show, will be presented by the Girl Reserves, under the direction of Marie Mor gan Saturday night in the YWCA bungalow. A special invitation is extened ed to soldier to come with or without dates. The show will last from 7:30 to 8:15. Open house will follow for those interested in staying.
