What with point rationing forcing many Hollywood stars
to reduce, Warners’ Sidney Greenstreet has a lot to worry
about. According to a new contract which the rotund star has
just penned, he is to keep his weight above 200 pounds, or
oof he goes.
Laff of the week : 20th’.s Tyrone Power in his marine corps
haircut. After seeing the star minus some of the black locks,
it's ea3y to see where most of the Power glamour came from. Tys
last pic, “Crash Dive," a story of the submarine service, will soon be
released.

ris, alias Alice Faye, giving- out for Payne and Oakie in “Hello,
Eriaco, Hello," wliich opened Thursday at the Mac for a six-day run.
The film’s chief attraction is Miss Faye, whom press agents claim
lost nine pounds for the opus. Naturally, they don’t say she could
stand to lose about 25. However, 20th ought to be glad to get her
back, as their recent musicomedies have lacked something for the
past year.
Saddened fans who enjoy Kay Kyser, and rumor has it that
there are quite a few of these characters about, even on the college
campuses where they should know better, were ready to start shed
ding er3at.2 tears when Kay was set for army induction. But their
hpppy little hearts are again high, for Doc K. (not of musical
knowledge, but a pharmacy degree from N.C. university) was re
jected, because of arthritis and other things. Kay is now sending
the chilluns back to the cornfields again. Only question: how can
Kyser leap about so if he is practically a walking corpse ?
Local show houses offer diver
sified bills for the weekend. The
Heilig has “This Land Is Mine,”
heavy drayma, with Chuck Laugh
ton, roly-poly British star, and
Maureen O'Hara, refined Irish
washerwoman. The film is one
of those heavy deals, the kind
that give you something to think
about these days when we all
have nothing to do but sit about
and look happy.

Berlin’s "This Is the Army" in time for its July 4 world premiere,
five production units are at work on various phases of the show at
Warner Bros.
Director Mike Curtiz is putting George Murphy, Ronald Reagan,
George Tobias, A.lun Hale and other members of the cast through
a ,backstage number; Kate Smith is recording "God Bless America,"
With 1)0 singers; 75 soldiers are at work on the “American Eagles"
number; 30 chorus girls are rehearsing a “Ziegfeld Follies" routine;
and 70 dancers are dabbing in taps for the “Well Dressed Man in
Harlem" number.
Absur i character: James Fiddler, McNaught Syndicate’s Holly
wood Reporter, who sometimes puts his readers in peculiar positions.
Take his quote from Sunday’s release: “If you’re the sensitive type,
never strike up a conversation with Greer Garscn just before she’s
to play a dramatic scene.” Isn't that clever. Just imagine you and
l ,.alking into Greet s dressing room. Just as we get to the door,
you whisper quitetly to me: "I know you’re the sensitive type, so
don't strike up a conversation with Greer, she’s just about to do a
dramatic scene." Sometimes we wonder whether or not Fiddler
knows Carson.

Sing a dirge for a dream that has vanished away
Like a bubble that's pricked by a pin.
Drop a tear for the boys who awaited the day
When the women outnumbered the men,
The pool1 boys who gloated wrhen draft numbers rose
And the air corps sent calls for its own,
Who envisioned the springtime when they would be those
Who were left with the women alone.
Give a cheer for our lovely Department of War
Which, foreseeing our feminine woe,
Is returning the men to the campus once more
As fast as it caused them to go.
